Published: April 2022

United States

GiveWell is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization in the US. US donors are able to claim tax deductions for donations to GiveWell to the extent permitted by US tax laws. We are registered as The Clear Fund, and our federal tax ID (EIN) is 20-8625442.

You can find information about how to donate here.

Netherlands

GiveWell is a Public Benefit Organization (Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling, or ANBI) in the Netherlands. Dutch donors are able to claim tax deductions for donations to GiveWell to the extent permitted by Dutch tax laws. We are registered as The Clear Fund, and our RSIN is 8262.78.516.

Dutch donors interested in setting up a periodic gift agreement should email donations@givewell.org. Please do not include a BSN or any other private information in your initial email to us.

Our donation options for Dutch donors are the same as for US donors. You can find information about how to donate here.

United Kingdom

We are in the process of finalizing registration of GiveWell UK as a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation, and expect donations to be tax deductible for UK taxpayers and eligible for Gift Aid (subject to local tax law) in the coming months. If you’d like to donate in the meantime, you can make a donation to our top charities or Maximum Impact Fund through Effective Altruism Funds. Donations via EA Funds are currently tax deductible for UK taxpayers and eligible for Gift Aid.

Other Countries

Donations to GiveWell or GiveWell UK are not tax deductible for donors in other countries; however, GiveWell has established agreements in some countries with organizations that are able to direct tax-deductible donations to us or to our recommended charity programs. These options are listed below. For countries that are not listed, we unfortunately are not aware of tax-deductible options for donating to us or to our recommended charities.

If you decide to donate through any of the organizations below, we ask that you also submit our donation report form, which helps us measure our impact by tracking donations that are influenced by our research but not made directly through GiveWell.

Other EU countries

If your country is not listed above, you may still be able to make a tax-deductible donation to the Against Malaria Foundation or SCI Foundation via Transnational Giving Europe. Use the links below to find out if donations are eligible in your country.

Countries not listed

Unfortunately, there are a number of countries where people wish to use our research but none of our top-rated charities are tax deductible. In some countries, donors may be able to take advantage of donor-advised funds or fiscal sponsorship organizations in order to make tax-deductible gifts to our top charities.

In general, we think that differences in effectiveness between charities are sufficiently large that in cases where the best giving opportunity may not be tax deductible, it makes sense to give a smaller post-tax donation to the best organization rather than a larger pre-tax donation to a tax-deductible organization. However, we understand that donors may have different intuitions on this question and are hoping to eventually have tax-deductible giving opportunities in other countries with many GiveWell users.
