I'm being pointed to this thread. Reminds me of the discussion of America's food culture in 's An Economist Gets Lunch, and how our long supply chains privilege canned, prepackaged, and frozen foods over fresh produce.

Is there a good explainer on why Shanghai is having such severe food shortages? I get that there are booming cases and strict lockdowns, but the severity of their logistical problems seems like a totally avoidable governance failure. Feels like there's more to the story.

Worthwhile Canadian initiative? A federal competitive grant program for municipalities that speed up the pace of home building. Not sure I know enough about Canadian institutions to have a clear sense of whether this will work.

If you favor a system where the ruling party can act in the general interest like a benign dictatorship, where traditional family is accommodated, subsidiary is respected, the Supreme Court is not central, and constraints on power are more normative than formal, move to Canada.

We need unemployment insurance reform. Unemployment happens way more frequently than people realize, but only about a quarter of the unemployed receive UI.

Thread: Right-wingers want to "cancel" Disney. tells the that they need to clarify what they actually want: Is it an end to corporate rent-seeking or a targeted retaliation at a specific company?/1

So weird to watch mutual aid supporters shit on the welfare state. The leaders of mutual aid and fraternal societies (which were the largest voluntary associations in the United States outside of the church) supported the New Deal and the welfare state:

Transformers work because their attention mechanism provides context for any position in an input sequence. "The transformer does not need to process the beginning of the sentence before the end. Rather it identifies the context that confers meaning to each word in the sentence."

Brandom anticipated this in the Artificial Intelligence chapter of Between Sayings and Doings. He argued nothing in principle rules out a truly discursive AI, but that symbolic approaches are too insensitive to context and the need to continuously update collateral commitments.
