Work Shadowing
Work Shadowing Conversation summer 2021 will run remotely. The virtual scheme will focus on first year undergraduate students gaining an insight into a job function and/or sector, by conducting a remote one-to-one (approximately one hour) career focused conversation with a professional in a job function and/or sector of interest.
Following an application process, the Work Shadowing team will match students to hosts to have a one-to-one virtual career focused conversation over summer 2021. This opporutnity is open to any first year undergraduate Imperial College London student, but we prioritise students from widening participation backgrounds. The Work Shadowing Conversation is not a recruitment activity, and student(s) matched to your organisation may come from a variety of STEM backgrounds.

How does it work?
We are seeking applications from hosts in all employment sectors as we have a diverse range of students interested in careers as wide-ranging as Actuary to Zoology.
Your host registration form will be used to create an anonymised profile for Imperial first year undergraduate students to apply to. Any matched student will have expressed a strong interest and motivation in gaining an insight into your sector or occupational area.
Work shadowing has no cost for the host organisation. The Work Shadowing team will support you by providing a recommended structure for the one to one conversation. Typical career insight topics that we will recommend will include:
- Career journey to date
- A day in the life of explanation
- Recommended skills for your job profile or sector
- Application and recruitment hints and tips
Students are advised to follow the Imperial Work Shadowing Informational Interviewing Guide to structure their career focused conversation.
When does it take place?
The Work Shadowing Conversation currently has two intakes: spring and summer. The spring opportunities take place during the Easter holiday and the summer opportunities take place during the summer holiday. Please review the Imperial College London calendar for guideline dates.
Hosts and students will be asked to decide on a mutually agreeable date and time for the one to one conversation.
