Our new Presidential Scholarships for students of Black heritage provide a package of financial and mentoring support for students applying for Master's study in autumn 2022.

One Presidential Scholarship is available in each Faculty (Business, Engineering, Medicine and Natural Sciences) for Black applicants who have Home fee status.

What does the scholarship cover?

Each scholarship covers:

  • Home tuition fees up to £18,500* for eligible Master's courses;
  • An annual maintenance grant of £16,500;
  • An allowance of £1,500 for equipment; and
  • Mentoring support.

(*For the MSc Applied Machine Learning in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and for any Master’s courses in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering the full Home tuition fees will be covered)

Who is eligible?

To meet the eligibility criteria for a Presidential Scholarship for students of Black heritage, you must be in one of the following ethnic heritages (or their equivalent in the respective application systems):

  • Black – African
  • Black – Caribbean
  • Black – Other
  • Mixed – White and Black African
  • Mixed White and Black Caribbean
  • Other Mixed background – including Black African, Black Caribbean or Other Black background

How to apply

To apply for a Presidential Scholarship for students of Black heritage, you need to:

1. Search for the course you want to apply for. Please see below the list of eligible Master's courses for a Presidential Scholarship. One of the aims of the Master's scholarship funding is to encourage more Black students to participate in courses that lead to PhD study.

Eligible Master’s courses

  • One-year full-time Master’s courses in the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Faculty of Engineering
  • One-year full-time MRes in the Business School
  • Exclusions: On-line/distance learning courses and courses whose duration is longer than one year (ie part-time courses, the MA/MSc Global Innovation Design & MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering at the Dyson School of Design Engineering) are not eligible

2. Create an online account and submit your application through our application portal and apply as soon as possible – use our guide to How to apply for additional help.

3. Receive an offer of a place for 2022 entry by the scholarship deadline of 11:59 pm (UK local time), 25 May 2022

4. Firmly accept the offer by the relevant deadline

5. Complete our Presidential Scholarships application form by the deadline of 11:59 pm (UK local time), 25 May 2022

Outcome of Scholarship
