This course will focus on issues surrounding epistemology. Epistemology is the area of philosophy that explores notions such as truth and knowledge and grapples with the age-old problem of what it is possible for us be certain of. When trying to answer this question, however, it quickly becomes apparent that issues of truth cannot be explored in isolation, and must delve into questions about the mind, about the nature of being human, about how language works and about our deepest and most fundamental assumptions about life and the nature of reality.
With this in mind, the course will range over a wide terrain of different thinkers, schools of thought, methods of philosophy and different metaphysical approaches to the world and life.
No academic qualifications or previous experience of philosophy is necessary. This beginners' adult education class is open to all.
Subject to sufficient enrolment, a separate live online taught lunchtime course will also be available.
Attendance certificate
Those who attend at least 80% of the course sessions will receive an attendance certificate from Imperial College London upon completion of the course.
