Exclusively for first year undergraduate Imperial students, the scheme will give you an opportunity to explore the realities of a professional's career journey, and to converse with someone working in your sector of interest.

Interacting with a professional will help you explore different career areas so that you can make informed career choices. The Careers Service Work Shadowing Conversation aims to provide you with an insight into a job function and/or sector, by conducting a remote one-to-one career focused conversation with a professional.

It provides an exclusive networking opportunity for you to connect with companies, further your career research and showcase on your CV as an extra-curricular commercial awareness activity.

Typical career insight topics will include:

  • Career journey to date
  • A day in the life of explanation
  • Recommended skills for the job profile or sector
  • Application and recruitment hints and tips
  • Opportunities for Q&A

The Work Shadowing scheme has two intakes: spring and summer. Register your interest for the spring 2022 scheme to be kept up to date when applications open.

The summer 2021 Work Shadowing directory, and other information, can be viewed on the directory page.

How do I apply?

The Work Shadowing Conversation currently has two intakes: spring and summer.  The spring opportunities take place during the Easter holiday and the summer opportunities take place during the summer holiday. Please review the Imperial College London calendar for guideline dates.

Register your interest for the spring 2022 scheme to be kept up to date when applications open.

Eligibility

Work Shadowing Conversation is exclusively available to first year undergraduate students at Imperial College London. We have chosen to be selective for this year group as we appreciate that it can be particularly difficult for first year students to network and gain professional insights.

Each intake will have set date range (to be announced when applications open) and you will need to ensure you have some availability within this.

Funding

Work shadowing is an unpaid experiential learning experience which gives you the opporutnity to converse with a professional in a job role/sector of interest to you. As such you will not be in receipt of a salary for the time spent with an organisation however reasonable travel costs and expenses can be paid for students from low income backgrounds.

Terms and Conditions

Please note we cannot guarantee that every application will result in a work shadowing opportunity. Student/Host matches will be made on the basis of the preferences expressed in the application form and on the strength of the application answer. Where the scheme is over-subscribed priority will be given to students that meet the College’s Widening Participation criteria. If you are unsuccessful in the first round (Spring), you will be eligible to re-apply for a place in the second round (Summer).

If you have any questions about the scheme, please contact workshadowing@imperial.ac.uk.
