Items with military application are listed on the UK Military List. Exports of these items and related technology and software always require an export licence.

Examples of military items

Some broad examples from the Military List are provided below, but the List also covers constituent systems, components and software:

  • Guns, tanks, fighter planes and warships;
  • Phased-array radar antennae and weapon-locating systems;
  • Thermal imaging devices;
  • Target acquisition and tracking systems; and
  • Missiles and associated technology.

There are some areas of research where staff should always seek advice before proceeding with any interaction. Please see section "2. Are the items being exported controlled?" on the Do I need an export licence? page for guidance.
