Impact Acceleration Accounts have helped a number of projects to expand the reach of their work and create impact. More infomation about their experiences can be found on the Impact Acceleration Accounts case studies webpage

 

 

Since 2012, Imperial College London has been in receipt of funding from a number of Research Councils to support the development of research to economic and societal impact through activities that:

  • Widen participation in business engagement and knowledge exchange
  • Broaden and enhance the skills of the researchers
  • Accelerate the commercialisation and impact of research

The IAA funds are being used flexibly and rapidly to support the following key areas:

  • Building relationships and networks with potential users of research to facilitate co-production of knowledge and maximise impact 
  • Movement and secondment of people between Research Organisations and user stakeholders 
  • Support for researchers to build networks with potential users of the products of their research, and further work to establish ‘proof of concept’ for their innovations 
  • Drive culture change in Research Organisations to promote knowledge exchange and improve related skill sets and capabilities 
  • Improve engagement with the public sector, civil society, industry (including SMEs, local business and the Technology Strategy Board) and publics.

Impact Acceleration Accounts

BBSRC Impact Acceleration Account

BBSRC Logo The College is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a BBSRC Impact Acceleration Account designed to support a similar set of activities to that supported by the other current RCUK Impact Acceleration Accounts.

The objectives of the account are to:

  • Support the development of BBSRC funded research activity towards commercialisation of the outputs.
  • Translation of BBSRC funded research and knowledge to end user communities.
  • To increase the number of high quality case studies related to the direct and/or indirect impact of BBSRC science.

EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account

EPSRC Logo Established in October 2012, the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account is our largest and longest running account and the College is delighted to announce that EPSRC are extending funding for the IAA through to the end of March 2017. The total investment in impact projects across the College will now total £9.56M. The IAA is helping us to maximise our economic and social impact by ensuring we deliver research and expertise effectively and efficiently to external partners in areas covered by EPSRC research. It funds a range of support mechanisms, from initial engagement and collaboration, through to commercialisation.

The objectives of the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account are to:

  • Fill a critical gap in the innovation chain by supporting very early stage research translation and all-important proof-of-concept studies that are essential first steps in the technology transfer process through individual community-led projects.
  • To make research outcomes accessible to potential end users by presenting them in a meaningful and user-focused context.
  • Increase the pool of academics actively engaged in impact and translation activities by bringing them into the network of their peers, and provide appropriate mentoring to support the development of activities.

ESRC Impact Acceleration Account

ESRC Logo Imperial College London is proud to announce that it has been awarded a four year ESRC Impact Acceleration Account (ESRC IAA) and subsequent bridging year to support a diverse suite of activities running until March 2019.

This IAA is designed to enable our social science scholars and community to enhance the impact of the social science research with they are engaging to end-user communities and to increase awareness of the opportunities which our end-user communities will be able to exploit.

It is helping us to encourage two-way dialogue and collaboration between our social scientists and research users in external organisations, in order to maximise the potential impact of social science research on policy and practice.

The objectives for the ESRC Impact Acceleration Account are to:

  1. To maximise the impact of social science research at Imperial, by providing opportunities for social science research to be integrated into our end-user communities by,
  2. building partnerships between the social science scholars across the College and the external community, in so doing, embed social science approaches and methods in research throughout our many stakeholders and practitioners and ensuring that we,
  3. increase awareness of Imperial’s social science and its impact both externally (the public, business and government) and internally, including closer engagement with the ESRC Social Science week activities to ensure maximum exposure and integration of internal scholarship to an external audience.

NERC Impact Acceleration Account

NERC Logo The College has been involved in two pilot schemes for NERC for which we have received £270k until for projects and activities running until March 2015.

The objectives for the NERC Impact Acceleration Account were to:

  1. Strengthen interaction between NERC-funded science and the user community, primarily businesses, to accelerate and amplify the impact of NERC science.
  2. Support strategic level, cross-project impact activities that help enable impact to be achieved in a more effective and timely manner.

STFC Impact Acceleration Account

The objectives of the STFC Impact Acceleration Account are to:

  • Support high quality strategically focussed impact activities arising from STFC supported research to develop proof of concept studies or to carry out market analysis to identify potential impacts from the developed research/technologies;
  • Generate interest in undertaking impact activities across the  STFC supported community;
  • Increase the number of high quality case studies related to the direct and/or indirect impact of STFC science.
