About the Author

A Certified Child Life Specialist in the hospital for 15 years, Laura has built her career around helping children cope with their health conditions or the health conditions of their loved ones. While Laura has done a lot of work directly with children, she has found that giving caretakers the words to explain and start the conversations builds a foundation for coping and understanding throughout the family unit. Laura has experience working with children with a large variety of health problems, has an in-depth understanding of the hospital system, and is very familiar with children's common questions and stressors. On top of all of this, Laura is a mom of three children herself. She has a real understanding of how busy life can be. She knows that we all want to support our children through their challenges, but that time flies and the best intentions sometimes don't get fulfilled. She hopes that the books help develop a vocabulary and common knowledge within the family unit, that leads to conversations in the car or at the dinner table. This book helped me explain to my 6 year old on why mommy has lost 2 babies in the past year. I couldn't really find to words for him as i was still struggling with grief myself and i think he was too because sometimes he would ask me if the baby died because i wasn't eating healthy enough or something and all i could do was just shrug my shoulders as any mother who goes through a loss we blame ourselves for a bit, did i drink to much caffeine? Did i forget my prenatal that day etc.. Its easy for us to just go along and i needed something to help me explain to him that it just happens. In a way it helped me too, i needed a reminder it wasn't my fault.

I would highly recommend this book to explain loss of a sibling to children 2-6. It uses age appropriate words and descriptions. It's perfect because there is no religion aspect. It simply explains there was a baby and now there isn't and that happens sometimes and that all feelings are ok feelings to have about it. It explains it a very childlike way

Simple, yet realistic approach to PAIL

This is a very simple, non-threatening children's book intended for siblings whose baby brothers and sisters did not get to come home. It explains pregnancy loss in a realistic, yet simple way: "Lots of babies grow in tummies and come out when they are big and healthy. Our baby didn't grow this way. We dont know why. It's no one's fault. Sometimes, sad things happen." The book reassures children that sadness is normal and that they will always be a big sister or big brother. It also gives children and caregivers ideas regarding how to remember and celebrate their babies.
While the book is intended for young children, there are several resource pages included in the book for adults, as well.

Simple, clear, to the point

The hospital gave us this book. It was perfect. It explains what happened simply, without a lot of extra stuff. I shy away from a lot of children's books that deal with emotions in grief, because my child often doesn't have the emotional response that the book tries to show, and I don't want to plant an idea in his head that isn't there right now. So it can be hard to find books to support us in grief. But this one doesn't delve into a lot of weeds. It just explains things well in a way a young sibling can understand, gives words for parents to use when explaining things, and opens the door for more in depth explanations if a parent wants to give them. Great resource. I definitely recommend it to anyone dealing with infant loss.
