Brain Science Facts...Experiences Wire the BrainThe most important five years in any person’s life are the first five years and brain science proves it! Research clearly shows that a child’s early experiences with the world and interactions with adults collectively builds the brain’s architecture – which creates the foundation for all future learning. Put simply, experiences wire the brain – and the more early experiences, the better!
Every person is born with 100 billion brain cells. However, for these cells to have any value, they must be wired – or connected to each other.
In the first few years of life, over 1 million neural connections are formed every second in a child’s brain. These connections are created through a child’s early experiences with the world and positive interactions with adults.
85% of a child’s brain is developed by age 5. Sensory pathways develop first, followed by early language skills and higher cognitive development skills.
Academic achievement gaps begin as early as 18 months of age. It is at this point that differences in the size of a child’s vocabulary first appear. Language development is a key component of Kindergarten readiness and Kindergarten readiness is a key predictor of lifetime academic success.
By age 3, children who are immersed in a language-rich environment tend to develop vocabularies 2 to 3 times larger than children who are raised in language-poor environments. The amount and variety of words that a child is exposed to in the early years matter.
If a child begins school behind their peers, they tend to remain behind throughout their academic careers. Research demonstrates that if 100 children leave first grade without really knowing how to read, by the end of fourth grade, 88 of those children remain poor readers.
