Surprised this isn't making more news, but the world is about to hit 10 billion #Covid_19 vaccine doses. Most human beings have now had at least one.

Very much enjoyed "The Future Years", covering history of Analog Devices in Limerick. Touches on industrial policy (Ireland's first semiconductor fab, enabled in part by IDA), long-term university partnerships, and management/organizational philosophies.

1/ 2.5 yrs ago I visited @stripe’s library (TY, @pioneerdotapp!).
I walked away with more books than I could carry (TY, @sashadem!) and an instant love for @stripepress—so it’s a bit surreal to announce today that I’m switching gears @stripe to become its commissioning editor.

[One caveat: I'd prefer the framing of "can young scientists, supported in part by Silicon Valley, fix things?" I, , , etc., are mostly just capital providers. The scientists are doing the fixing...]

Abundance requires innovation.
Innovation begins with science.
But scientific funding in the U.S. is broken—it's too slow, risk-averse, and old.
I wrote about a surprising coalition of tech founders and star scientists who are trying to fix it.

As a new user of Stripe, I was blown away by customer support earlier this week. I woke up at 3am & started working through a "hairy" problem, used the website to contact support, & a knowledgeable human being called me in less than two minutes to walk me through API docs.

The NRC was created in 1975. Since then, zero new nuclear power plants in the US have ever reached operation.
[New = entities whose initial application for a construction permit / operating license (or a combined license) was filed with the NRC.]

In Q1 2019, 39% of Stripe's hiring was outside Bay Area and Seattle. Last quarter, it was 74%. I think the rate at which tech industry is going global is still under-appreciated, and that this will be a big tailwind for the world over the next decade.

The book does a very good job making clear the vaccine program wasn't a case of august mechanisms working neatly as designed. It was a case of stubborn iconoclasts persevering in the face of opprobrium, doubt, and endless setbacks... and saving the world.
