 Malaria Consortium’s initial engagement in Myanmar began during the 2005 Malaria Programme Review. In 2011, Malaria Consortium worked with the Ministry of Health’s Department of Medical Research to support the first artemisinin resistance containment baseline survey in Myanmar, which looked at growing resistance to antimalarial drugs. We also provided expertise on malaria prevention and control during the 2012 joint assessment of the response to artemisinin resistance in the region and participated in the initial development of the Regional Artemisinin Initiative, supported by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. In the same year, we began supporting the implementation and analyses of the first Myanmar Artemisinin Resistance Containment (MARC) survey.In 2013, Malaria Consortium was invited by the Myanmar Minister of Health to establish a permanent presence in the country, providing technical assistance for malaria control and in particular through monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities. Our Country Representative was nominated as a member of the national Malaria Technical Strategic Group (TSG), which comprises experts from the Ministry of Health, UN agencies, non-governmental organisations and donors, and serves as the forum for technical matters and, as necessary, providing national level inputs and support. Malaria Consortium is also a member of the government led TSG on Malaria, TSG Core Group on Malaria, and the TSG M&E group. Our Country Representative was elected to represent the INGO Forum at the high-level Myanmar Health Sector Coordinating Committee chaired by the Minister.
