The first book we read was 's Negotiating Opportunities and one told me they "ran around in circles in their room" when they realized their reluctance to ask questions of teachers was a class thing more than a personality flaw (paraphrasing, posting w/permission).

I'm teaching my Class Class to mostly 1st-years & I already can't count how many students have told me in office hours (which I require them to come to [on zoom or in person]) how much talking explicitly about social class has helped them make sense of their entry to Swarthmore.

OK meiosis tweeps, if you know and love and know how cool he usually is, you’ve got to see him under REAL pressure. , seems like a good idea for GRC meiosis, no?

    1. Encouraging news from Pfizer today. But lots of parents I interview say they aren't ready to vaccinate their kids, and most school leaders say they're far from mandating vaccination. and I report on the challenge of buy-in

"Why am I here?"- I certainly do it all the time. I like to tell my diverse students this is deeply personal and a very important question to answer to ourselves. We don't owe this answer to academia or anyone else. It is us who carry this awful unnecessary weight and 1/2

I'd like to see changes that would increase the success rate to something more like that = ~30%. I think the GSI plan was a good one designed by folks with a lot more data and modeling than i have at my fingertips

The meritocracy argument, the reason most efforts to fix any inequity get killed (aka why we can’t have nice things)

Still haunted by the conversation I had with Prof Big Pants a few years back about meritocracy who, by having advanced their career via that mechanism, argued strongly that it was a legitimate framework within which academia could function. FML.

I find this interesting. Most of my training has been in med schools (and in cancer) and I think PhDs tend to worship MDs. The good news is the trend seems to be moderately decreasing, the bad news is that nevertheless, it persists.
