New project proposal - WikiYouth: Building Open Data Together[edit]

Hi, everyone!

I am one of the organizers of the IGF Youth Summit, a Day 0 project of the IGF 2021. As a member of the board of the Youth SIG from the Internet Society, we are trying to engage young people that are part of the internet governance ecosystem in Wikimedia projects. We delivered our first project a few months ago, but now we are trying to do something more focused and easier to learn, while trying to get more fruitful results to the Wiki community.

That is why we are proposing a Rapid Grant Contest centered in Wikidata called WikiYouth: Building Open Data Together, aiming to add relevant data to Internet Governance and youth pages. I would really appreciate it if you guys could review it and give us a few tips on how to improve the idea, and if anyone wants to help in this project, we would love an extra hand or two!

The Coolest Tool Award aims to recognize and celebrate the coolest tools in a variety of categories.

The awarded projects will be announced and showcased in a virtual ceremony in December. Deadline to submit nominations is October 27. More information: m:Coolest Tool Award. Thanks for your recommendations! -- 2021 Coolest Tool Academy team

Suggestion[edit]

There should be an option to simply ban IP addresses from account creation, rather than affecting the people with that IP address. 71.172.112.82 13:02, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

I'm quite sure that will require an update to the GlobalBlocking tool; you may submit a feature request here. Inlcude tag "GlobalBlocking". — xaosflux Talk 16:54, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Update of "m:Persistent words added by unregistered" chart[edit]

Is it possible to get an updated version of m:Persistent words added by unregistered editors to English Wikipedia per month is plotted over time? mentioned in https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Measuring_edit_productivity by User:Halfak_(WMF) who has left. Proxies[edit]

Should they really be hardblocked? Soft blocks would be better. Even better, instead of immediately blocking proxies just wait until one abuse and then block them. We should always assume good faith. 74.105.247.66 19:11, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

If I use my VPN's "keep moving" protocol, every edit I made would be from a different IP, every minute, a significantly different one. If we had to wait for one to abuse then we'd never be able to block anyone using proxies properly.
Now the softblock/hardblock one is interesting, but would still come with real issues for the checkusers - someone actively generating a swarm of sockpuppet accounts would always outpace our trying to stomp on them Nosebagbear (talk) 19:32, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Test Wikivoyage Incubation rules[edit]

I want to start a Wikivoyage incubation project in the Wikimedia incubator, for Meitei language (Manipuri language) (mni.wikivoyage.org)! Could the community explain me what minimum duration, minimum active members, minimum contents of articles, and other essential rules for its approval as an independent wikivoyage project, are needed? Licensing discussion for Abstract Wikipedia and Wikifunctions[edit]

We are looking for input on the question: what licensing structure we should apply to Abstract Wikipedia and Wikifunctions. After some initial discussion, the two following questions in particular remain open and would benefit from your input:

  1. Should Abstract Content for Abstract Wikipedia be published under CC 0 or CC BY-SA (or is either fine)?
  2. Should code in Wikifunctions be published under Apache or the GPL (or is either fine)?

Please see Abstract Wikipedia/Licensing discussion for details and an overview, and respond within the "Open Questions" discussion threads below that linked-summary. Much thanks. --Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:37, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

@Quiddity (WMF): When is a end time? ✍️ Dušan Kreheľ (talk) 14:27, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
@Dušan Kreheľ: Our plan is to summarise the discussion and opinions towards the end of the next week, that is, probably on December 16, to leave the draft summary and draft decision up until December 20, and finalise the decision just after or during the office hour, assuming the feedback is positive. (The discussion started on November 22, with steadily expanding announcements as the questions get clearer.). Thanks for asking, I'll add a clear note to the page itself. Notice - hrwiki - delete template change[edit]

Croatian Wikipedia (hrwiki) has made changes to it's deletion template (hr:Template:Delete). It now requires substitution in order to work properly. This was done as part of an overhaul in the deletion procedures, in order to achieve more transparency and enable automated opposition discussion handling.

Since this template used by foreign editors for tagging spam pages, I thought a highly visible notice like this may be beneficial. —Ivi104 12:35, 14 December 2021 (UTC)
