As always w/ FB, we should 1) be skeptical; 2) demand FB be completely transparent about the changes, including releasing research they've done on new features; 3) remind lawmakers FB's changes are always surface deep & no substitute for real regulation

Instagram launched 11 years ago today. Since then, it was acquired by Facebook and algorithmically retooled to put profits ahead of all else to the detriment of the mental health of its users. If you're one of them, share your story below.

We have growing evidence that Facebook KNOWS kids under 13 are on its platforms. If that’s the case, the company must comply with a federal privacy law I wrote. I will look into this as we fight to hold Facebook accountable for the harms it’s inflicting on kids and teens.

As the mom of two girls, this is personal to me. This isn’t some hypothetical — ’s decisions are harming real kids, particularly young girls. Our children must come first.

. strongly encourages banning targeted advertising to children, noting that Facebook's algorithms can continue to target kids even if advertisers aren't explicitly allowed to options to target them. We can't help but agree!

Facebook has had some of the research showing Instagram's negative effects on teen girls for FOUR YEARS. That's four years' worth of self-harm, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and other harms Facebook could've prevented if it cared about more than its bottom line.

Absolutely horrific: when teens experience mental health issues as a result of Instagram use, Facebook research shows they enter a negative feedback cycle where they use Instagram even more. Facebook is directly profiting from teens' mental health crises.
