IDC Offers to Review States' SPPs/APRs, Including the SSIP

IDC is pleased to announce that we are offering each state the opportunity to have IDC staff review drafts of the state’s SPP/APR, including the SSIP, for completeness, quality, and accuracy. From December 1, 2021 through January 25, 2022, IDC staff are available to review states’ draft SPP/APR indicators and provide states with feedback and suggestions. IDC State Liaisons and other expert staff will conduct reviews on a first-come, first-served basis and will return feedback no later than 10 days from receipt of draft APR documents. To take advantage of this opportunity, please contact your IDC State Liaison.

LEA EDFacts Edit Check and Data Display Tools

The LEA EDFacts Edit Check and Data Display Tools allow states to identify potential business rule errors or errors in category sets, subtotals, or totals prior to submitting Child Count and Educational Environments, Discipline, and Personnel data to the OSEP via the EDFacts Submission System. These timely tools also provide states with user-friendly data summaries. States can use the tools to check LEA-level EDFacts data files and as data displays in their work with their LEAs.

Reminder: Public Comment Period Opens for EDFacts Information Collection Package

The U.S. Department of Education announced that the EDFacts Information Collection package for the SY 2022–23, 2023–24, and 2024–25 is now available for review and public comment. This announcement is located here on the Federal Register and the package may also be accessed here on Regulations.gov.  The public comment period closes on January 14, 2022 and all comments must be submitted through Regulations.gov.

The Department Releases New Resource on Supporting Child and Student Social, Emotional, Behavioral and Mental Health during COVID-19 Era

The U.S. Department of Education released a new resource: Supporting Child and Student Social, Emotional, Behavioral and Mental Health to provide information and resources to enhance the promotion of mental health and the social and emotional well-being among children and students. This resource highlights seven key challenges to providing school- or program-based mental health support across early childhood, K–12 schools, and higher education settings, and presents seven corresponding recommendations.

The Department Announces New Guidance that Reaffirms Importance of Full Implementation of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

On August 24, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) sent a letter to its state and local partners reiterating its commitment to ensuring children with disabilities and their families have successful early intervention and educational experiences in the 2021-2022 school year.

OSEP Releases New Fast Fact Data and a New Supplemental Tool, Hand In Hand

OSEP released a new OSEP Fast Facts: Race and Ethnicity of Children with Disabilities Served under IDEA Part B and new supplemental tool, Hand In Hand. This tool explores IDEA, Section 618 data with the specific lens on race and ethnicity. OSEP Fast Facts is an ongoing effort to display data from the 12 data collections authorized under IDEA Section 618 into graphic, visual representations with the intent to present 618 data quickly and clearly.

This week, as we recognize the thirty-first anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) and Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) have issued a new resource, "Long COVID under Section 504 and the IDEA: A Resource to Support Children, Students, Educators, Schools, Service Providers, and Families"

OSEP Released New Maintenance of Financial Guidance

OSEP posted a revised version of the Process and Criteria Used to Evaluate a Request by States to Waive Maintenance of Effort (MOE) Requirements under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) document. This document provides guidance to SEAs on the factors the Department considers when reviewing requests for waivers of the maintenance of State financial support requirement under Part B of the IDEA. This document replaces the Department’s June 2010 version of this guidance.  To learn more, click here.
