The American Medical Association (AMA) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Royal College) have renewed their continuing medical education (CME)/Continuing Professional Development (CPD) agreement whereby select activities approved for Royal College MOC Credits are eligible for conversion to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The renewed agreement is in place through Dec. 31, 2020.
Only those national specialty societies and simulation programs that have been approved by the Royal College as accredited CPD providers and those university offices of CME accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME) are covered by this agreement.
Only those CPD activities approved by Royal College accredited CPD providers (as described above) in the following categories are eligible for conversion:

Section 1, live face-to-face group learning

Section 1, web-based synchronous
-
Section 1, web-based asynchronous
-
Section 3, self-assessment programs (designed to help the specialist identify gaps in knowledge)

Section 3, simulation activities
Credit cannot be designated retroactively.
Royal College MOC credit (as described above) will only be converted to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for individuals who have received a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or an equivalent international degree. Other health care professionals can receive a certificate of participation in an activity eligible for conversion to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
Credit will be converted based on 1 hour of participation equaling 1 credit for all activities.
Physicians wishing to convert Royal College MOC credit to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™, and other health care professionals wishing to obtain a certificate of participation, will be required to follow the instructions outlined below. Physicians and other health care professionals will be required to pay a processing fee to the AMA.
The following AMA credit designation statement must be included on all disseminated promotional materials and all certificates given to physicians for their participation in the above-described categories.
“Through an agreement between the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert Royal College MOC credits to AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. More information on the process to convert Royal College MOC credit to AMA credit can be found on the AMA website."
Certificates provided to participants should delineate the total number of accredited hours of the activity so that the appropriate conversion to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ can be made.
