    The fear of Black men and White women being intimate, having children, and cohabitating was the fuel that white supremacy used to murder Black men. Many of their names fill the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.

    “Some people just couldn’t bring themselves to do it. People still have deep-seated feelings about interracial marriages,” a professor at a mostly White college in Mississippi told the Associated Press at the time.

    46% - A 2011 poll found there was still strong opposition to interracial marriages in Mississippi, with 46% of Republicans saying they were against it.

    In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned anti-miscegenation laws that forbid interracial marriages. But in Mississippi, interracial marriages were outlawed in the state’s constitution until 1987. The vote to repeal the ban was extremely close.

    52% in favor, 48% against - Mississippi's state constitution outlawed interracial marriages until 1987. In the vote that repealed the ban, 52% voted in favor, 48% voted against it.
