An understanding of the fundamental principles of ethics is critical to providing excellent care. This requires examining how systems-based practice raises new ethical challenges, and understanding the fiduciary nature of the patient-physician relationship and the relationship between ethics and the law. What is illegal is usually unethical, although what is unethical is not always illegal.
