With the global coronavirus pandemic in its second year governments are still struggling to vaccinate their populations to herd immunity levels. The Delta SARS-CoV-2 variant has been a source of increased case rates and of non-severe breakthrough COVID-19 infections among vaccinated people, and investigators are working to determine if, when, and in whom additional vaccine “booster” doses would be helpful for illness prevention and pandemic control.
