Remember when we thought Operation Warp Speed would deliver hundreds of millions of doses by the end of 2020? Why didn't that happen? The answer includes a ton of nuance and a fair bit of friction, too. Check out my latest story for .

In case you don't think FDA is moving faster than normal these days, see this comment in their preview docs for 's booster. THis is highly unusual.

Do I have a point? Not really. I just thought it was an interesting choice to go after a nonpartisan research group by saying "What's Kaiser Family Foundation really up to?" and then citing research by a dark money group.

Do I think Protect Our Care is somehow backed by and a mouthpiece for the drug industry? No. In fact, the group wrote a scathing report saying the drug industry has backed a bunch of misleading ad buys. But who knows who Protect Our Care is backed by.

Anyway, the whole thing was a journey. And I figured since that's time I can't get back, might as well share it on twitter.

Who funds it? Good question. Lots of big, anonymous donations, like that $51.7 million from... blank.

So what's Sixteen Thirty Fund?, I ask myself (and also google.) Oh, it's a dark money group. Here's a story about it from a while back:

Is it a PAC? Yes, but I don't think it donates directly to campaigns. Mostly ad buys. That said, it's filed a document with the FEC with a more complete name: Protect Our Care A Project of Sixteen Thirty Fund.

For no reason at all, I got curious. Protect Our Care, I think, what's that? A nonprofit? I check nonprofit databases...and no, it's not. Well is it a coalition? I don't see any members listed. I even check the Wayback Machine to see if maybe they were listed in the past.

THEN, it points toward another poll by a group called Protect Our Care as a shining example of a better poll even tho the group also supports govt price negotiation - the thing PhRMA opposes.

When I saw the PhRMA email, I thought, OK, PhRMA's been saying it opposes govt price setting. But the weird thing about the email is that it cites other KFF polls to back itself up, and blasts this one (the one with findings it doesn't like) as partisan.

Here's a link to the poll, which has findings on several questions and includes KFF's methodology. (Disclosure: I used to work at , which is an editorially independent newsroom that's part of the overall foundation.)

Welp, an email from PhRMA this morning sent me down a rabbit hole that led me to a dark money group. The email was taking aim at for its recent poll that showed Americans are now in favor of govt drug price negotiations and aren't convinced by arguments against it.
