Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Intervention in the Elementary Grades
The What Works ClearinghouseTM has released a new practice guide on assisting students struggling with mathematics in grades K–6. A panel of experts including educators in both mathematics and special education distilled recent, rigorous intervention research into six practice recommendations for educators. The guide can help educators tailor their math instruction approaches and small-group intervention programs and will also be useful to math specialists, math coaches, district and state personnel, and parents. Practices with strong evidence include use of systematic instruction, clear and concise mathematical language, appropriate representations of mathematical concepts and procedures, number lines, word problems, and timed activities to build fluency. See the practice guide for specific steps for carrying out the recommendations.
