Question:
What type of state-level data does NCES offer?
Response:
The selected publications and web sites listed below provide recent state-by-state information on achievement, attainment, demographics, enrollment, finances and teachers at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary level. Other editions of these reports are available through our Publications & Products site.
Digest of Education Statistics
The Digest of Education Statistics provides a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of education from prekindergarten through graduate school. Topics in the Digest include: the number of schools and colleges; teachers; enrollments; graduates; educational attainment; finances; federal funds for education; employment and income of graduates; libraries; technology; and international comparisons.
This site, which draws primarily on data collected by organizations other than NCES, compiles and disseminates data on state-level education reform efforts in five areas: Accountability, Assessment and Standards, Staff Qualifications and Development, State Support for School Choice and Other Options, and Student Readiness and Progress through School.
National Assessment of Educational Progress: State Profiles
The State Profiles web site presents key data about each state's student and school population and its NAEP testing history and results. The profiles provide easy access to all NAEP data for participating states and links to the most recent state report cards for all available subjects.
With the NAEP Data Explorer (NDE) you can create statistical tables and graphics to help you find answers. Explore the results of decades of assessment of students' academic performance, as well as information about factors that may be related to their learning.
Common Core of Data (CCD) publications:
School and Agency Reports: School and Agency Reports give state and national totals from the CCD School and Agency file. These totals include: schools and their characteristics (Type; Magnet, Charter, and Title I status; Urbanicity; Size), students, federal program participation (Free and Reduced Lunch, Migrant, English language learners, and Individualized Education Programs), and district size.
State Nonfiscal Reports: These reports release the CCD State Nonfiscal data. State Nonfiscal data reports include state totals for students (totals and by race/ethnicity), graduates, and staff counts.
District Fiscal Reports: These brief publications contain data on revenues and expenditures per pupil made by school districts. Median per pupil revenue and expenditure data are reported by state. There are also discussions on the different types of school districts, and other resources that may be helpful in analyzing school district level data.
State Fiscal Reports: These reports release the CCD State Fiscal data. They include revenues by source and expenditures by function and object, including current expenditures per pupil and instructional expenditures. Recent HTML versions contain tables that can be downloaded as Excel files.
Dropouts, Completers and Graduation Rate Reports: These reports present the number and percentage of students dropping out and completing public school (among states that reported dropouts and completers).
Elementary/Secondary Information System (ELSi)
ELSi is an NCES web application that allows users to quickly view public and private school data and create custom tables and charts using data from the Common Core of Data (CCD) and Private School Survey (PSS).
Education Demographic and Geographic Estimates
The Education Demographic and Geographic Estimates (EDGE) program develops information resources to identify and understand the social and spatial context of education in the U.S. It uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey to create custom indicators of social, economic, and housing conditions for school-age children and their parents. It also uses spatial data collected by NCES and the Census Bureau to create geographic locale indicators, school point locations, school district boundaries, and other types of educational geography to support spatial analysis.
This site conveniently provides a variety of education statistics that analysts may find useful without consulting numerous research documents.
