I hereby recognize you, Ocaasi, for all your anti-vandalism work and continued use of the STiki tool. You've classified over 4,000 edits! Additional thanks for watching my talk page(s) and all the suggestions you've put forth. While I personally thank you for your support, you've also done a lot of good for the community in the process. Keep up the good work, West.andrew.g (talk) 04:56, 20 April 2011 (UTC) Thanks for all your patient efforts in uploading images even when it seems all the copyright nightmares get in the way. I just found it in incomplete form laying around in a folder, as yet unposted on your talk page. The image of Atlas is incorrect, the world being flat and resting on the back of a turtle. According to Bertrand Russell's editor according to Stephen Hawking in a brieft history of time, that turtle rests on the back of another, in an infinite regress of turtles. So the Atlas carrying the world of mentees actually rests on the back of another mentor, and so on all the way down. I never got around to fixing the image of Atlas for the mentoring barnstar, so I will just give you the ingredients, and you can build the barnstar yourself out of these ingredients. :) !!!! Jake Orlowitz (User:Ocaasi) founded The Wikipedia Library and ran it from 2011-2019. By the time he left the program at the Wikimedia Foundation, TWL had a half-million dollar budget and 6-person team on 4 continents. Through The Wikipedia Library, Jake developed partnerships with 70 leading scholarly publishers to provide free access to 100,000 scholarly journals and reference texts. 25,000 editors now have access to those sources through the Wikipedia Library Card Platform. Jake created the viral #1Lib1Ref and #1Bib1Ref citation campaigns, which now add 10-20 thousand new references each year from librarians around the world to Wikipedia. He started the Wikipedia Visiting scholar program, the Books & Bytes newsletter, the Wikipedia + Libraries facebook group, the Wikimedia and Libraries Usergroup, and the @WikiLibrary Twitter account.

Jake negotiated the collaboration with Turnitin to fix copyright violations on Wikipedia, started collaboration with Internet Archive to rescue 10 million dead citation links, integrated OCLC ISBN citation data into Wikipedia's reference autogeneration interface, and began a project to add Citoid to Wikidata. He developed the OAbot web app, and is a founding member of the Open Scholarship Initiative. He co-released a dataset of Wikipedia's most cited sources and the proportion of free-to-read sources on Wikipedia. Jake created The Wikipedia Adventure interactive guided tutorial and facilitated the first-ever for-credit Wikipedia editing course at Stanford Medical School. He is an English Wikipedia Administrator. 2-time Wikimedia Foundation grantee, former Individual Engagement Grants Committee member, founding board member of Wiki Project Med Foundation, former Organizing Committee member for Wikicite, Linked Data 4 Libraries Program Committee member, and founder of the Wikimedia Foundation's Knowledge Integrity Program.

Jake has presented about Wikipedia, citations, and reliability at five Wikimanias, Stanford University, Internet Librarian, the American Library Association, OCLC, and IFLA. He is a primary author of "The Plain and Simple Conflict of Interest Guide", "Conflict of Interest editing on Wikipedia", "Librarypedia: The future of Libraries, and Wikipedia", "The New Media Coalition Horizon Report for Libraries", "The Wikipedia Adventure: Field Evaluation", "Writing an open access encyclopedia in a closed access world", "The Wikipedia Library: The world's largest encyclopedia needs a digital library, and we are building it", "You're a researcher without a library: what do you do?", the Wikipedia "Research Help" portal, "Why Medical Schools Should Embrace Wikipedia", and the forthcoming Wikipedia @20 chapter "How Wikipedia Drove Professors Crazy, Made Me Sane, and Almost Saved the Internet." He has been interviewed by Publishers weekly in "Discovery Happens Here", Tow Journalism School for "Public Record Under Threat", and was featured in the documentary "Paywall: The Business of Scholarship".

  • "I call this Revolution 2.0. Revolution 2.0 is, is - I say that our revolution is like Wikipedia, OK? Everyone is contributing content. You don't know the names of the people contributing the content ... This is exactly what happened... Everyone was contributing small pieces, bits and pieces. We drew this whole picture. We drew this whole picture of a revolution. And that picture - no one is the hero in that picture."

Activist Wael Ghonim

  • "I'd like to say out loud that I really liked the atmosphere, that I enjoy more and more the simple fact that when we are together (chapters, WMF, affiliates, user groups, everyone) we feel like a movement, we act like a movement, we work and eat and drink and dance together and we argue much less than when we are online, typing in front of screens. I learned a lot about the ongoing transformation of the Wikimedia Foundation: many things are changing, they are working a lot, and very often we as affiliates do not notice these things. I saw many changes towards a better, more open and more collaborative Foundation, and I don't know many times I heard WMF employees asking for feedback and help."

Aubrey, President of Wikimedia Italia, on Wikimedia-l after the 2015 Wikimedia conference in Berlin

  • "And when people did help they were given a flattering name. They weren’t called “Wikipedia’s little helpers,” they were called “editors.” It was like a giant community leaf-raking project in which everyone was called a groundskeeper. Some brought very fancy professional metal rakes, or even back-mounted leaf-blowing systems, and some were just kids thrashing away with the sides of their feet or stuffing handfuls in the pockets of their sweatshirts, but all the leaves they brought to the pile were appreciated. And the pile grew and everyone jumped up and down in it having a wonderful time. And it grew some more, and it became the biggest leaf pile anyone had ever seen anywhere, a world wonder."

How to argue well
You should attempt to re-express your target’s position so clearly, vividly, and fairly that your target says, “Thanks, I wish I’d thought of putting it that way.
*You should list any points of agreement (especially if they are not matters of general or widespread agreement).
*You should mention anything you have learned from your target.
*Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or criticism.
-Daniel Dennett

A few thoughts to remember, for online collaborators, or any collaborator, really

1. We are a community of very real people with deep emotions and human complexities.
2. We are deeply invested in our project, so much so it hurts us at times even if it is also a passion or refuge for many.
3. You never know what someone has been through, or is going through.
4. We all need help at some point. There is no shame in needing help, asking for help, or receiving help.
5. If you are ever feeling completely hopeless: Wait. Things really can get better. Talk to someone about it.
6. Mental health carries a powerful stigma. The more we are open about it, the less that weighs all of us down.
7. If we listen, we can learn from each other.
8. We need to be kind. This is a higher calling than civility, and entirely compatible with achieving our goals.
9. Our movement depends on its people. We are our most valuable resource.
10. We are not finished products. With time, space, support, and practice — people can, and do, grow and change.
-Ocaasi

  • "You see, Wikipedia brings people together. It brought me together. It just takes some time for everyone to get their heads on straight, before they can see that their lives too have a mission, and an [edit] button."

Journey of a Wikipedian

  • "So, does all this mean Wikipedia is perfect? Heck, no! What I mean is that it’s an excellent place not just to soak up the sum of all human knowledge, but also to learn how to conduct oneself in a society riven with conflict and ambiguity, where might sometimes seems to make right and in the end all one can really be certain about having the power to safeguard is one’s own integrity. Maybe that’s a dim view of the world, but when you consider all the bad things that happen every day, you know, getting into (and out of) an edit war on Wikipedia is a relatively safe and surprisingly practical way to learn some key lessons about life."

All I Really Needed to Know I Learned Editing Wikipedia

  • "The more radical the person is, the more fully he or she enters into reality so that, knowing it better, he or she can transform it. This individual is not afraid to confront, to listen, to see the world unveiled. This person is not afraid to meet the people or to enter into a dialogue with them. This person does not consider himself or herself the proprietor of history or of all people, or the liberator of the oppressed; but he or she does commit himself or herself, within history, to fight at their side."

Paulo Freire

  • "So there was this exhilarating sense of mission—of proving the greatness of the Internet through an unheard-of collaboration. Very smart people dropped other pursuits and spent days and weeks and sometimes years of their lives doing “stub dumps,” writing ancillary software, categorizing and linking topics, making and remaking and smoothing out articles—without getting any recognition except for the occasional congratulatory barnstar on their user page and the satisfaction of secret fame. Wikipedia flourished partly because it was a shrine to altruism—a place for shy, learned people to deposit their trawls."

The Charms of Wikipedia

  • "It worked and grew because it tapped into the heretofore unmarshaled energies of the uncredentialed. The thesis procrastinators, the history buffs, the passionate fans of the alternate universes of Garth Nix, Robotech, Half-Life, P.G. Wodehouse, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charles Dickens, or Ultraman—all those people who hoped that their years of collecting comics or reading novels or staring at TV screens hadn’t been a waste of time—would pour the fruits of their brains into Wikipedia, because Wikipedia added up to something. This wasn’t like writing reviews on Amazon, where you were just one of a million people urging a tiny opinion and a Listmania list onto the world—this was an effort to build something that made sense apart from one’s own opinion, something that helped the whole human cause roll forward."

The Charms of Wikipedia

  • "In fact what Wikipedia presages is a change in the nature of authority. Prior to Britannica, most encyclopaedias derived their authority from the author. Britannica came along and made the relatively radical assertion that you could vest authority in an institution. You trust Britannica, and then we in turn go out and get the people to write the articles. What Wikipedia suggests is that you can vest authority in a visible process. As long as you can see how Wikipedia's working, and can see that the results are acceptable, you can come over time to trust that. And that is a really profound challenge to our notions of what it means to be an institution, what it means to trust something, what it means to have authority in this society."

Understanding Wikipedia[edit]

Understanding Wikipedia
"Wikipedia only works in practice. In theory, it could never work."
Understanding the vandal-fighting web

Wikipedia works because of how many people participate in creating and checking its pages. All changes go through a virtual filter--a gauntlet--of intelligent computer and human review. Thousands of people are constantly scouring new changes, and millions of readers keep an eye out for anything that seems off.

Because of this process, research studies have shown that Wikipedia is just as accurate as traditional encyclopedias, but its errors get fixed faster. We are living proof of the coders' motto that "With enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow". In other words, many hands make anything possible!

1. Edit filter (automatic pattern rejection)

2. CBNG (machine-learning artificial neural network bot)

3. Huggle, Igloo, Lupin's filtered list (human assisted regex/badwords)

4. STiki (cbng residual feed, missed vandalism, subtle vandalism--human assisted metadata and pattern based review)

5. Article watchlists, selective page and topic monitoring by users

6. Pending changes, live version delay, reviewed by autoconfirmed users

7. Semi-protection, prevents non-autoconfirmed users from editing

8. Full protection, prevents non-admins from editing

9. Official readers, journalists and subjects of articles who report mistakes in the news (not good!)

10. Random readers, millions of individuals who fix errors when they come upon them

Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – As a football referee, this person's page gets vandalized every time one team or the other feels slighted by one of his calls. Jennifer Homendy[edit]

Reason: There was a long string of obvious vandalism, but all of it was done by IP accounts[1][2][3][4][5]. Registered editors were making productive edits, not engaging in edit-warring -- full page protection should be lifted so they can continue to do so. Stonkaments (talk) 21:50, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

Pinging protecting administrator El C. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 00:58, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
Yes, well, as I explained on the talk page, I'm inclined to give another day or two for the unconfirmed accounts to make their case. But if another admin feels the full protection should be immediately converted to semiprotection, I have no objection. I honestly don't know enough about contested subject matter, so I chose to err on the side of caution. Any admin who knows more than me about this (a low bar), is welcome to act as they see fit. I need not be consulted or even notified. El_C 01:28, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
@El C: The protection duration is only 5 days, which is perfectly reasonable for a content dispute. I typically protect for at least 1 week in those cases. I'd let it run its course and then change it to indef semi. The good-faith IP editors can always request edits on the talk page. Even while fully protected, any editor can still request edits. ~Anachronist (talk) 18:09, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
Being the current chairwoman for the NTSB, indeed, makes her an obvious candidate for a lengthy WP:AP2 protection, in the years if not indef. El_C 18:30, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
I admit to some amount of confusion why full protection was the correct level. I don't work protection regularly so I'm not going to just accept El C's invite to just lower the protection level but thought it worth noting in hopes of getting an explanation. No issues per above with the length of protection. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 22:14, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
RE: Barkeep49's query: dispute over new content added on Sept 25 involving NTSB chair and Tesla. As I mentioned 2 days ago, the full protection will be converted to semi by tomorrow if opponents have yet to participate on the talk page by then. Proponents have participated on the talk page, though in fairness, that participation has consisted almost exclusively of just objecting to the protection. El_C 00:41, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Dremo[edit]

Reason: The protection is no longer necessary because I want to create the article after noticing there is no article of such, I've gone through the deletion log and discussions and I'm sure to address the problems the previous pages had. --Idoghor Melody (talk) 20:48, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

New page reviewer[edit]

User:Aloolkaparatha[edit]

I have been editing on Wikipedia from a time. Initially, it was very difficult and most of the articles I created were moved to drafts. But with a lot of effort and help of others, I kept on learning and working and moved all my articles in mainspace one by one. I have participated in many AFDs and also added tags on new pages, as required. Plus, I have also nominated many articles at AFD and they were deleted. I am confident that, I understand the notability guidelines well and can help with new page reviews to reduce the log and burden on other editors. Aloolkaparatha (talk) 14:40, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

I've been editing Wikipedia for more than a year. Now I have more spare time. I've read lots of guidelines and have actively worked on AfD and PROD lately. I also review new changes from time to time and new pages via New Pages project. I like that. I'm also a patroller in my local wikipedia, so my experience is slightly bigger. I have also tagged dozens of "old" and newly created articles with proper tags and got zero negative feedback from administrators. I do understand the notability guidelines, especially BLP and organizations as you can guess from my edtis. I do think over every edit I make, so be aware I won't make mistakes. --Asketbouncer (talk) 20:47, 28 September 2021 (UTC) Asketbouncer (talk) 20:47, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

Help manage the queue. TrangaBellam (talk) 14:47, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
Administrator note @TrangaBellam: You seem to have a undeniable point of view about India-Pakistan and similar relations. I'm afraid this may affect your reviewing process, as you have used the undo button various times to re-add possibly biased or controversial text. @ToBeFree: I've pinged ping the admin that granted you rollback for another opinion in case I'm being overly cautious. Anarchyte (talk) 10:50, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
Pinging @RegentsPark:, as an admin patrolling ARBIPA. You seem to have a undeniable point of view about India-Pakistan and similar relations is an irrelevant observation - editors can have their POV as long their content is NPOV. TrangaBellam (talk) 11:00, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
TrangaBellam's editing is neutral as far as I can see so pending changes should not be a big deal. I did notice, however, this open SPI Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Faizan involving them. I have no idea how valid the accusation is but perhaps it is better to wait till that is resolved. --RegentsPark (comment) 12:47, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
There should be no action until that SPI is resolved, yeah. I can also see Anarchyte's concern. Rollback is used for reverting pure vandalism only; pending changes reviews apply to good faith contributions as well. I have no opinion in this specific case, I'd just like to request that noone makes any decision based on my granting of rollback. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 18:31, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks to both of you. TrangaBellam (talk) 23:24, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
On some retrospection, the situation is surreal. Here Anarchyte is indirectly accusing me of an anti-Pak (or pro-India) POV while the SPI accuses me of the very contrary! TrangaBellam (talk) 23:24, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

User:WildStar[edit]

I participate in several WikiProjects such as WP:Random page patrol and WP:WikiProject Cleanup and periodically see "There is 1 pending revision awaiting review" when doing cleanup duties. Any changes I then do, are simply queued up if there is already a pending edit awaiting review, and no longer auto-accepted. I usually look at the history and diffs and on many occasions could have easily reviewed the pending change(s) while already there instead of simply piling on. Since I am familiar with the guidelines for the review process and meet all the criteria for requesting the "pending changes reviewer right", I believe I would be a good candidate to have this tool and help with any backlog that may exist. Thank you! — WILDSTARtalk 15:52, 24 September 2021 (UTC)

Comment: Hi Mohammed12313893, thanks for your enthusiasm to contribute to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, a basic criterion for attaining this user right is "You have a reasonable editing history – as a guide, enough edits that a track record can be established", which I just can't see here. As a general guideline, you should be involved in countervandalism experience (i.e. going through problematic edits and reverting them yourself) before applying here. I'd also like to note that new users and users who aren't extended-confirmed are also unlikely to get this role as, again, you don't have the reasonable editing history stated above. Please understand that I am not an administrator and that I am not declining your application (I'll leave that to the real admins), I'm just here to give you some information and my honest opinion that admins may not have the time to give every applicant. Rollback[edit]

User:Dudhhr[edit]

I request rollback rights to help with fighting vandalism, as Twinkle does not always work well on mobile devices, which I primarily edit from. I frequently patrol New Pages and recent IP edits to check for vandalism and other disruption. dudhhrContribs 05:11, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
Done with minor reservations. I hate this edit; it's contrary to everything we're going for here but I'm letting it slide because it was in your first month or so of editing and I can't see any instances of you repeating the behaviour. User:RFZYNSPY[edit]

Hello, I'm RFZYNSPY. I'm requesting rollback rights because I want to use Huggle to its fullest extent. I have been using Huggle as a way to monitor vandalism, but I'm limited to the read-only version of the English wiki without rollback rights. Because of this, I'm also unable to warn users through Huggle or mark edits as good or bad in order to change editor confidence. I am a strong candidate for using rollback because I'm currently enrolled in the WP:CVUA and I'm coming up on my 1,000 edit milestone. I will treat rollback with care, making sure it is only used for the speedy reversion of clear vandalism. Thanks for your consideration. RFZYNSPY talk 05:33, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

User:Noorullah21[edit]

I would like to request permissions for Rollback. The reason being is I encounter occasionally, usually from a sockpuppet account, and it would be much easier if I could use rollback, hence I am applying to gain the permission to do so, I have read the guidelines thoroughly and I understand the use of Rollback entirely. I believe I am responsible and trustworthy enough to use it. I have dealt with Vandalism from a sockpuppet on the British protectorate page, and Third Anglo-Afghan War page as signs of experience by reverting their edits. User:Nolicmahr[edit]

A user has edited a poorly watched page twice in an almost WP:Disruptive manner. There seem to be no watchers who will undo the repetition of WP:sections in his revisions: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Maratha_Invasion_of_Goa_(1683)&oldid=1045772150

I tried but I am unable to undo the repetition of sections, I could really use some rollback in this page to bring it back to WP:MOS and also whenever similar situations arise in the future. Nolicmahr (talk) 11:49, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

Nolicmahr I don't quite understand the reason for this request, but you appear to have been able to revert those edits - what's the problem? I'm not seeing regular reverting in your recent editing history that would indicate a need for the rollback tool. Girth Summit (blether) 14:49, 25 September 2021 (UTC)

@Girth Summit: Must read all the section subheadings in this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Maratha_Invasion_of_Goa_(1683)&oldid=1046356560 once to understand, please. It was in there after the 2nd disruptive edit, that I was very much out of options to undo the copy pasting of repetitive content. That's why I posted a request here. I want to use rollback feature rights, it allows me to rollback faster for fighting vandalisms. Articles like Ex Battalion, Carmina Villarroel, Andrew E., Salbakuta and more articles that are not protected is full of edits of unregistered user, and most of them are doing vandalisms instead of editing properly. You can visit my user contributions, or the page history of the articles I mentioned above so you can see the vandalisms I reverted. It's hard to use the manual revert when I reverting a revision of a big articles. My device lags when I use manual revert to revert a revisions of a big article, Thank you. clipred (talk) 23:26, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
I'm still waiting for the admins response. clipred (talk) 06:24, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
