Safe mosquito repellents for your baby: photos

Reviewed by our paediatrician, Dr Saroja Balan.
  • can of insect repellent cream and spray
    1 / 7

    Creams, gels, roll-on sticks, wipes

These repellents can be effective but usually only last for a few hours. Choose one suited for children or infants.

It's best to avoid applying these directly on your baby's delicate skin for the first three months. They could cause an allergic reaction or rash.

Use products containing DEET only on children older than six months.

  • plug-in mosquito repellent
    2 / 7

    Liquid vapouriser

Plug-in mosquito repellents contain chemicals which are not safe to be inhaled. They can cause or aggravate breathing problems. They may even irritate the eyes or cause allergies.

You can put a vapouriser on for some time to get rid of any mosquitoes in the room and switch it off well before you bring your baby in.

Read more on using a vapouriser safely.
  • mosquito repellent spray
    3 / 7

    Sprays and foams

Fumes from sprays are not safe for your baby. They can cause allergies and breathing problems.

If you use a spray in a room, keep all doors and windows closed and make sure your baby is not in the room at the time. Bring your baby in when the smell of the spray has gone.

  • mosquito repellent coil
    4 / 7

    Coils

The smoke of coils may cause allergies and breathing problems. Some research even links them to lung cancer.

They can be used outside your doors and windows to keep mosquitoes away from entry points but do not use them near family members.

Find out how to use coils safely.
  • mosquito repellent mat
    5 / 7

    Plug-in mats

Plug-in mats have the same poisonous fumes as liquid vapourisers and so are not safe to use near your baby. If you have a toddler in the house, you also need to be careful that he doesn’t eat or play with one.

Find out how to use mats safely and what to do if your baby accidently eats one.
  • essential oils and incense
    6 / 7

    Natural repellents

Essential oils, incense or candles made from mosquito repelling scents can be safe and effective if used the right way. Some scents that repel mosquitoes are lemon grass, citronella, neem and lavender.

Find out how to use essential oils safely.
  • mosquito nets
    7 / 7

    Mosquito nets

Nets can be very effective if used well and have no negative health effects. Nets are available for cots but can become ineffective if you are taking your baby out of his bed to feed or change a nappy several times a night. These are best used if you are co-sleeping or once your baby is weaned and sleeping through the night.
