25 weeks pregnant: fetal development

Your baby now weighs nearly 660g, about the same as a rutabaga (shalgam). He measures over 34.6cm (13.6in) from head (crown) to heel.

He'll soon begin to put on some baby fat. As he does, his wrinkled skin will begin to smooth out and he'll start to look more like a newborn.

Your baby's hair is growing. If you could see it, you’d notice its colour and texture. This early baby hair often falls out on its own after birth and is replaced by new hair that might have a different texture. Newborn hair can be very fine but the new hair might be thicker.

Your baby's senses are getting better. His eyelids are still sealed shut but they are starting to separate. He'll keep his eyes closed for now but he'll soon be able to sense light through his lids.

As your baby's reflexes develop, he may react to a sudden loud noise by jumping or kicking his legs. So next time you're in the kitchen and your pressure cooker goes off, see if you get a reaction!

This is a special time in your pregnancy, as you and your baby begin to feel and respond to each other.
