    Just finished my last day at the . Grateful to have started my legal journey in Youth Defense in the state I grew up in! I'm also excited to share that this fall I will take the next step on that journey working at in PG County!

    Excited to see announce his campaign for DC Mayor. Really looking forward to hearing a different message on Education, Public Safety, Criminal Justice & many more topics than what we hear from the current mayor. I encourage folks to listen!

    Together, with the courage to do what is right and the conviction to center people over politics, we can make the potential of DC a reality. The time is now. I’m running for mayor.

    Would also love to see community-based organizations be invited. So many incredible organizations in doing life-saving work that are vital voices in this conversation.

    Chairman Ready says he’s convening a larger meeting with more stakeholders including CM Allen, DM for public safety Gelhardt, MPD, OAG. I’d like to see ONSE in attendance as well and will inquire about that.

    The fact that this even requires legislation is ridiculous. But since it is, I appreciate introducing the Right to Read Act & and others for their leadership this past budget cycle.

    Last week, I introduced the Right to Read Act - guaranteeing every DCPS school have a full-time librarian. 📚 Every kid deserves a librarian in their school. Period. I wish that were a simple enough belief that was backed up in action & budgets. But it’s not. So here’s a 🧵 👇

    3) we need to vastly expand and sustainably fund these programs so they can grow/develop. 4) These discussions need to turn into action so that their positive impacts are felt by students & their families.

    Regardless of where these initiatives end up, I think a few things are clear: 1) We need to ensure that student & family voices are centered in developing this program. 2) Everyone involved with this program must be community-based and trained in working with youth.

    On the other hand, like many folks testified today, the current safe passage program does not address so many other important aspects of safe travel to-and-from school & it is necessary to include DDOT, WMATA, and other agencies to truly have comprehensive safety for students.

    They have also already started the important grant process to hire community organizations to be the outreach workers & in my opinion are better prepared to provide training to these workers on how to interact and engage with youth both inside and outside of school.

    Like others, I am not sure where these initiatives should live. On one hand, I don't want to halt the progress happening in the DME as they are more knowledgeable about & responsive to students/ families/educators than other agencies.

    And I am happy to hear pretty much universal support for both grants to community organizations to help with the issues of street harassment students are experiencing & for expanding safe transit options through shuttles/bus routes to help with vehicular violence.

    Working with Student Leaders, , , & the we were able to develop a boots-on-the-ground approach modeled after the Chicago Safe Passage Program & develop plans for microtransit routes. And this past year the finally received funding.

    When I moved back to DC in Aug 2019 I got involved with . I lost two students to violence on their way to/from school in KC. And unfortunately, the stories my students shared were not unique & many students in DC shared similar experiences with me.

    I grew up being taught whitewashed history in Oklahoma. Now I know better, so I wrote this to help myself and others do better. Thanks for making this piece more powerful and for introducing me to important Indigenous voices. How will you honor with action today?
