Strategic Planning

Strategic planning influences and guides the direction of our organization and articulates its mission, vision, goals, and objectives. It defines where our organization is going, and how success will be measured. Strategic planning helps us understand how our work fits in to the performance and success of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

In public health, strategic planning begins with identifying the needs of a specific population, their disease burdens, and the interventions necessary to improve their overall health. Relevant and accurate data is then identified and documented to assess progress towards meeting specific goals. Strategic planning is a dynamic process that adapts to meet changing public health conditions and priorities.

CDPH strategic planning is divided into high-priority goal areas that encompass all the work we do. They help coordinate and align resources and actions with our mission and vision. Everything we do at CDPH, from administrative operations to programs and services, is reflected in these goal areas in support of our mission.

Strategic planning aligns with other departmental initiatives such as Let's Get Healthy California and the public health accreditation process.  CDPH is currently working on an updated plan that reflects the Department's commitment to improving the health and well-being of California's diverse people and communities.
