As Uber and WeWork demonstrate, much industrial development in the U.S. isn't shaped by market competition, but by small groups of experts picking winners and losers. The question isn't whether parts of our economy will be planned, but which, and by who.

71% of R’s under 45 want more government intervention on jobs — even with higher taxes. 74% of R’s over 45 prefer lower taxes. This, via , sounds nuts, but it makes some sense. It’s the Reagan vs Trump experience of conservatism. Can they coexist?

The most striking statistic about the shootings in NYC this year is that 485 of the 505 shooting victims (96%) have been black or Latino. Just 7 have been white. That's an incredibly stark illustration of just which communities are genuinely affected by gun violence in cities.

There are more important failings in Weiss's post. But claiming that the "world has gone Corbyn" - paragraphs after celebrating the Gulf States' rapprochement with Israel - is just so dang mindless. Self-parodic the way Twitter dynamics are cast as more salient than geopolitics.

    3) But intellectually, it's hard to see how one can simultaneously deride the left for its hostility to Jewish ethno-nationalism *and* for privileging the group-specific rights of the historically marginalized over the ideals of liberal universalism.

    1) There's actually a lot of overlap between stalwart Israel apologist and arch-critics of cancel culture/identity politics in the U.S. (see Tablet's editorial interest in the latter). Which makes sense sociologically...

BW on Israel: Historically oppressed groups have a right to incinerate kids to protect their ethno-states BW on cancel culture: Historically oppressed groups have no right to stigmatize speech or demand their own safe spaces (as these privilege tribalism over universal humanism)

Liberals sometimes think they're sticking it to the GOP by calling red states moochers, but the message they're actually sending is that they don't care to help poor people in states run by their political enemies.
