Sail 4 Cancer provides respite breaks for families
affected by cancer.
A cancer diagnosis has a devastating effect on all
members of a family and we provide them with the opportunity to spend quality
time together away from the stress of living with the disease. Families in
these circumstances are often unable to afford a break as the diagnosis causes
financial stress due to reduced work hours or having to give up work
completely. These families can never take a day "off" from cancer and
it dominates all aspects of their lives. They often live with the worry, stress
and uncertainty for many years. We are increasingly receiving referrals where
the outlook is not positive and the families ask us for a last family holiday
together to create memories for the children.
Our respite programme consists of family sailing days,
riverboat adventures, cruises, park and resort breaks and sailing weekends for
youngsters recovering from cancer. We also support young carers who sacrifice
their childhood for the sake of their families by giving the whole family a
break.
We rely completely on donations and the sailing community
has been incredibly supportive from the start. We are so grateful for the help
we have received from clubs and individual sailors across the country over the
past 16 years. There are various ways to support us. Many clubs host small
regattas or social events or take part in our Tea by the Sea event during the
sailing season. We also host 24 hour liferaft challenges at various locations
during the year. Individual sailors taking part in big races often use it to
help us by raising sponsorship. We are grateful for any support, big or small.
