How to Get Legal Help

To apply for free legal help from Iowa Legal Aid, call 1-800-532-1275 Monday-Friday from 9 to 11 am or from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, except Thursday afternoon. You may apply online at any time. Offices are open 8:30 to 4:30 (emergencies taken when open. Iowans 60 and over may call the Legal Hotline for Older Iowans at 1-800-992-8161 Monday-Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm.

People who cannot get help from Iowa Legal Aid may be able to find a lawyer through the Iowa State Bar Association's Iowa Find-a-Lawyer website.Attorneys taking part in Iowa Find-a-Lawyer charge a $25.00 fee for the first 30-minute consultation. If you need more help beyond the 30-minute consultation, you will need to negotiate a fee arrangement with the attorney.

Languages and Accommodations

Iowa Legal Aid's goal is to communicate effectively with
our clients. We can use:

  • large print;
  • Relay Iowa;
  • Free interpretation service,
  • language translation service; or
  • other steps for effective communication.

Interpretation and translation services and reasonable
accommodations will be provided at no cost to qualified
applicants.
