Most work from our headquarters in Hamble, near Southampton, but some are based in other parts of the UK.     Director of External Affairs

    Permanent, full-time (35 hours per week)

    Location: Hamble, Southampton

    The RYA is the national governing body for all forms of boating including dinghy and yacht racing; motor and sail cruising; RIBs and sports boats; and windsurfing and personal watercraft, inland cruising and narrowboats. As the national governing body, we are constantly looking for ways to grow our relevance and influence at governmental and local level. We work tirelessly to retain members’ freedoms and protect their interests.

    We are looking for an experienced leader to spearhead the work of RYA’s Cruising, Legal and Government Affairs (CLGA) department in representing UK recreational boating interests. Ensuring that legislators, regulators and other authorities understand, and take account of, recreational boating activity. In addition, the CLGA department provides advice and guidance to RYA members, affiliates and colleagues on a broad range of areas affecting cruising, sustainability, equality and diversity and legislation. As well as planning expertise that protects existing boating facilities and promotes the expansion of facilities to cater for the future needs of the sport.

    Reporting to the Chief Executive, and as a member of the Senior Management Team, the Director of External Affairs is responsible for leading the development, implementation and communication of the strategy and work of the CLGA department. The work of the department will require the postholder to monitor and respond to legislative and regulatory proposals from government, National Governing Organisations and other authorities that may impact upon the freedoms or interests of the boating public.

    The successful applicant will have a proven track record in public affairs and developing strategy in response to key issues, whilst working in conjunction with a variety of stakeholder groups. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to ensure accurate and effective representation of the views and interests of the RYA and recreational boaters.

    Based in Hamble, near Southampton, the role will involve some travel to all parts of the UK, and occasionally internationally, to represent the RYA at conferences and other meetings.

    HR Advisor

    Salary: £27,500 - £30,000 per annum

    Permanent – Full-time (35 hours per week)

    Location: Hamble, Southampton

    The RYA has an exciting opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in their HR career. We are recruiting for a standalone HR Advisor, reporting to the Finance Director, who will also receive mentoring and personal development through the support of an external HR consultancy.

    This is an autonomous role that will require a confident and flexible HR Advisor who is willing to be involved in every aspect of the HR function and support a workforce across the UK of approximately 190 employees. 

    As the HR Advisor your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

    • Acting as the first point of contact for all HR queries, providing advice and guidance to managers and employees. Ensuring consistent interpretation and implementation of employment law, HR policies and procedures and best practice.
    • Administering and processing all HR correspondence, including starters, leavers, probation reviews, holiday, maternity/paternity leave, employee benefits and references.
    • Be actively involved in the full recruitment process, including preparing job descriptions, posting advertisements, attending interviews and drafting offer letters & contracts of employment.
    • Supporting managers and employees with the appraisal process, ensuring requests for personal development are actioned in conjunction with the relevant line manager.
    • Facilitating the annual employee survey process including collating and analysing results, reporting on the results and devising an appropriate action plan.
    • Working with the external HR consultancy on projects and initiatives associated with the HR function.

    We are looking for someone who can build strong, effective working relationships and who has a commitment to inclusive working, ensuring equality and valuing diversity.

    Candidates are to be be CIPD qualified to a minimum of Level 5 and have experience of working in a generalist HR environment, including experience of supporting managers across a variety of departments at different levels and in all aspects of HR and training & development.

    Performance Manager (RYA Cymru Wales)

    Maternity Cover, 9-12 months Fixed Term

    Location: National Outdoor Centre, Plas Menai, Caernarfon

    Part-time, 24 hours a week

    Salary: £34,000 per annum (pro-rata)

    Benefits package including pension, 28 days holiday (pro-rata) plus public holidays.

    An exciting opportunity to provide leadership and management of the RYA Cymru Wales Performance Team with responsibility for delivering the performance elements of the RYA Cymru Wales strategic plan which aims to ensure the success of Welsh athletes in national and international competition and support more Welsh athletes competing for the British Sailing Team at all levels.

    RYA Cymru Wales is looking for a self-motivated individual who will support the organisation in attaining our strategic targets.

    The Performance Manager will be responsible for the ongoing evolution of a strong and sustainable performance pathway within Wales and expected to work as part of the RYA British Youth Sailing team to deliver the UK wide remit of ‘developing the best racing sailors in the world’.

    You will have a background in coaching with good technical understanding of the recognised junior and youth classes, plus have an awareness of Olympic Class sailing and other British classes. You are already a self-starter capable of working independently and also as a supportive member of a dynamic and energetic staff team in the RYA Cymru Wales Office.

    You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a track record of working within a team and managing your time effectively to meet deadlines. The ability to lead, manage and motivate staff and volunteers, together with excellent organisational, planning and communication skills is essential. Due to the wide range of partnerships linked to this position the ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is considered desirable.

    Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Apprentice

    Salary: £10,500 per annum, increasing to £12,000 per annum after 3 months’ services

    Full-time, 35 hours per week

    Fixed Term Contract, approximately 15 months

The RYA is excited to announce that it is seeking an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Apprentice to work with its Safeguarding & Equality team to help implement and deliver the RYA’s Diversity strategy, which focuses on the following primary principles:

    In this role, your duties will include (but not be limited to):

    • Supporting and delivering Equality, Diversity & Inclusion programmes or initiatives within the RYA and across the sport.
    • Assisting in the delivery of key events or training relating to the area of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion.
    • Undertaking project work relating to the objectives of the RYA’s Diversity Strategy. Monitoring and reporting on their progress as required.

    As the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Apprentice you will be working towards the Level 3 Business Administration Apprentice through PETA. Completion of this apprenticeship takes approximately 15 months, and the RYA will fully support you in achieving this.

    Do you have an interest and passion for equality, diversity and inclusion? We are looking for an individual who is confident, self-starting and eager to learn. You will also have excellent communication skills with the ability to interact, proactively, with those at all levels. Good IT skills will also be essential in this role and you should have 4 GCSE’s at Grade C / 4 or above.

    Communicator (Sailability)

    Self-Employed, Contractor

    We have an exciting opportunity to provide communications services for the RYA’s Sailability Programme.

    The RYA is seeking to contract a communication professional to deliver the #MoreThanSailing campaign as part of the Sailability Programme and efforts to increase the number of disabled participants regularly involved in boating, prioritising inactive disabled people.

    The contractor will work with the Communications Team, the Sailability Team, national and local disability and community organisations, and the Sailability community.

    The focus of the campaign is to inform and inspire, engage, and sign participants up to boating opportunities. The campaign will have personal testimony at its heart, showcase the impact of boating and help people get on the water for the first time.

    Proven experience in digital, media and communications is required and an understanding of boating or a lived experience of disability or long term health conditions is desirable.

    The contract is for 30 hours per month at £32 per hour.
