Listeriabot[edit source]

Hi all, What would be the process for getting listeriabot activated on enwikiversity (current list of active wikis)? I've pinged the bot's creator (link) what needs to be done on their side. From what I can see, on our side we'd just need a couple of templates and to sign off on a bot permission. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 00:14, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Someone, preferably the bot owner, applies for bot status, demonstrates how the bot would operate, and gives the community an opportunity to comment. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 01:41, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
See meta:Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit/Bots_and_Tools#Guidelines_for_bots for general info. See meta:User:ListeriaBot for bot contact info. --Malyacko (discusscontribs) 23:18, 9 January 2021 (UTC)
Have the bot operator fill out the info at Wikiversity:Bots/Status. --mikeu
Thanks, in addition to the note on the bot creator's talkpage, I've also added an issue notice in the github repo, and added a note on wikidata general chat in case anyone else is able to assist. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 06:36, 14 January 2021 (UTC)
I've now filled in a bot application for it, and I think the bot has automatically registered an account (log item). T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 11:17, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

How to solve quadrilaterals with equations or expressions? --41.114.3.165 (discuss) 13:20, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

How's that? A quadrilateral is a type of figure: you can't solve them. —Justin (koavf)TCM 13:35, 23 January 2021 (UTC)
he may have meant quadratic equations? not sure. Cheers Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 03:08, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Footer copyright notice[edit source]

The current footer in VW states that pages are under CC BY-SA (I assume via MediaWiki:Wikimedia-copyright). This is true for the majority of pages, but some have ben released by their contributors under different licenses (e.g this page is CC BY). It would be good to be able to indicate this in the footers so that there isn't the possibility for conflicting information.

  1. Ideally have the ability to include a custom footer within a page (either via its css or some template) so that the exact license can be stated in the footer
  2. Alternatively, include the phrase 'unless otherwise stated above' in the footer

Any ideas? T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 08:27, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

@Evolution and evolvability: Sorry, this would violate wmf:Terms of Use. All text published on Wikimedia sites is published under CC-BY-SA and GFDL. According to Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Multi-licensing, users would be free to extend that licensing with additional licenses, but they can't remove or replace them. The multi-licensing article does suggest ways multi-licensing can be accomplished and provides a link to one example. In short, it needs to be done on an author-by-author or article-by-article basis. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 18:37, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
@Dave Braunschweig: Ah yes, I see what you're saying - any other licenses are in addition to CCBYSA+GDFL, rather than replacing them. In that case perhaps the appropriate wording could be something more like like: 'in addition to any licenses stated above'. That way when additional licenses are applied (article-by-article) there's indication of that in the footer? I feel that it reduces the possibility for confusion by people interpreting the footer and in-article additional license as conflicting. T.Shafee(Evo﹠Evo)talk 23:23, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext[edit source]

@DannyS712 and Koavf: It looks like we may need to modify MediaWiki:Protectedpagetext. See Wikiversity:Newsletters/Tech News#Tech News: 2021-05. Any volunteers? -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 23:58, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Sure, I'll modify it if you give me the rights. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 02:27, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
I assume there are no objections, but I'll wait a day just to be sure. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 03:24, 2 February 2021 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. Out of sight, out of mind. You're now an interface administrator for a week. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 14:23, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
I don't have a mobile device. Would anyone be willing to switch to Minerva and do a quick check to see if this works? (I know that I can preview mobile view but I want to make 100% sure that it works in the wild.) —Justin (koavf)TCM 15:29, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

Multiformat Export - Add Link in Menu[edit source]

Previously existing feature: Create Wikibook in 15min

Would it be an option to discuss within the community of administrators to provide the multiformat export as link in the side menu, just as in the German Wikiversity. Especially for the generation of tailored books designed for the individual prerequisites of learners is a great achievement. Learners have different skills and therefore classical one-fits-all approach with as standard book (digital or analogue) is brilliant option in Wikiversity to address these individual needs of learners. It was possible before with the WikiBook creator in the side menu in the past (see workflow for Tailored Wikibooks).

  • Wikibooks are generated and stored as MediaWiki articles,
  • the WikiBooks can be appended or modified by other learners according to their preferences and needs.,
  • Once exported into a PDF document, the learner can annotate the Wikibook with private comments that are not meant to be published on Wikiversity, Personal annotations can be made e.g. with the OpenSource software xournal++.
  • The tailored Wikibooks reflect the individual needs and the requirement of the learner. Annotations in the PDF are private in the document stored on the client. The PDF document may contain blank pages created by the teacher for additional learning task (e.g. painting diagrams and flow charts as a learning task). These learning tasks should not be stored online in discussion or talk pages (privacy). The PDF documents with annotations may be shared in a classroom situation only with other students or just shared with teacher for feedback as an annotated PDF.
  • Collections of aggregated article are prepared by teachers or lecturers. Students may add or remove specific articles according to the needs and requirements of the student.
  • Books can be stored on user pages e.g. of the lecturer or teachers. Private annotations or solutions of learning tasks may not be shared with the public and the private annotations are added to the exported WikiBooks only e.g. in PDF format or in the Open Document Format. Citation of the original source in Wikiversity and Wikipedia are added during the export as references to the source articles in Wikiversity or Wikipedia. Furthermore any updates of articles are integrated automatically in the Wikibook when the next export is performed. The Wikibook inherits all the improvements of the articles.
  • For specific collaboratively generated courses, it is required to have a reference document just like permanent links for articles. The exported Wikibook can be used as reference book as a static collection of articles. A new semester may change the reference document for new course members and skills.

If the backend of the server could cover the generation of WikiBook in WikiMarkdown - Multiformat Export may also be valuable beyond the german wikiversity e.g. in other languages (e.g. english, french, spanish,...) it might valuable for students also for courses in developing countries and languages that are not widely spread. It depends if the learners and teachers are aware of that option also in other languages to create individualized WikiBooks according to knowledge, preferences and skills about the topic of the course in their native language. Exporting the aggregated set of articles or script for a specific course is the first step befor annotating the PDF-export. Later the students complete a learning task in the generated WikiBook, e.g. complete the diagram with calculated value for the function or "draw a flow chart for the disaster manangement cycle and submit the completed course material as PDF to the teacher".

Anyhow the feature is usable for any MediaWiki already today and can be installed on the client side to fetch the aggregated articles in the WikiBook. Bandwidth for the download of the Wiki source is similar to delivery of the rendered single article. But MediaWiki2Latex maybe installed by computer scientist only e.g. if they are able to use the command line. Teachers and students may be better supported if they can generate the Wikibook directly from the side menu. Administrators may regard that as useful tool for the community and using online learning resource within Wikiversity in a tailored, demand and profile specific way for the students.

If it is not introduced in the English Wikiversity menu. No worries it is just a recommendation. I appreciate it very much, that this option is at least available in the german Wikiversity in the menu. The tool can be used for the English Wikiversity already now, but teachers and student will not know that option if that is not an available option in the menu. The tool generates Wikibook up to 5000 pages. I guess limitation to 300 pages will enough for scripts. A unit based export may contain just 4-10 articles as a PDF export. So I guess even decreasing the maximum size of pages for generated WikiBook will not limit the usability of that excellent individualized service for learners.

Eventmath: A Grant Proposal for a Wikiversity Learning Project - We would love your support![edit source]

Hi all!

My collaborator and I are working on a grant proposal for a new learning project on Wikiversity. We're calling it Eventmath, and we're really excited about it!

Our proposal will create an organized learning portal that will help math educators contribute lesson plans based on a news article or social media post. As part of the grant activities, we will also promote the project widely in order to build a self-sustaining community.

If you could express your support before the deadline today, it would help us to make this resource a reality!

Thank you so much!

--Greg at Higher Math Help (discusscontribs) 12:02, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

@Greg at Higher Math Help: I just saw your post. Since you mentioned a February 10 deadline I am wondering if it is too late to find out more? Just curious. Ottawahitech (discusscontribs) 18:09, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
@Ottawahitech: Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out! It turns out that it's not too late. We had to submit the proposal for elegibility review by February 10, and we did that. However, after attending a grant clinic, I learned that we can continue to improve the proposal until March 5. On March 5, the grant committee begins scoring the proposals. So, you can still add your endorsement, add yourself as an interested user or contributor, provide feedback, or ask questions! What would you like to know? Greg at Higher Math Help (discusscontribs) 08:22, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Eventmath Community Review and Endorsements Update[edit source]

We've passed the eligibility review and have moved on to the community feedback stage! Hurrah! If you have constructive feedback to share, bwsulliv and I welcome it on the Eventmath proposal's discussion page. If you'd like to add an endorsement, you can still do so by directly editing the Endorsements section; specifically, you can endorse the project by adding your name or username, along with a brief rationale. We appreciate any feedback or support you can provide! Thank you!

audiovisuals[edit source]

I am looking for learning materials related to the uploading of audiovisuals to a wiki. Just wondering how to search for this topic here. Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (discusscontribs) 18:03, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

@Ottawahitech: I don't know that there is much on this subject here. Your best bet, both for how to do it and where to do it are at Commons:. These materials should only be uploaded here if Commons refuses to host them. What we do have is at Special:Upload. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 23:17, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Should these articles stay or be deleted?[edit source]

As I progress learning about more English Wikiversity pages I might add to this list. I'm randomly going through pages to check for pages without Wikidata items which I try to find relevant items for(ie. if it is a general resource page about a common topic I might link it to an existing Wikidata item. If not, I create a Wikidata item). For these pages I hesitated to create Wikidata items(since I assumed they'd eventually be deleted or are going to be deleted in the future):

LotsofTheories (discusscontribs) 14:51, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

@LotsofTheories: We have Wikiversity:Requests for deletion for these types of discussions. That said, Wikiversity rarely has deletion discussions. Instead, we use {{proposed deletion}} whenever we come across something we would delete ourselves. That gives interested parties 90 days to save it. If you think something doesn't need to wait 90 days for an obvious outcome, you can also tag it with {{delete|no educational objectives}} or another WV:SPEEDY reason. Finally, resources that may be meaningful only to the original contributor can be moved to User: space or Draft: space instead of deleted. Thanks! -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 22:13, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Also, don't link Wikidata to Draft: space. Anything in draft space has been designated as not ready for public consumption, either by the original author or by a respected member of the Wikiversity community. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 22:15, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Upon reflection, these all seem to be copyright violations. Deleting. -- Dave Braunschweig (discusscontribs) 22:20, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
