Senegal

Senegal has made significant progress against malaria and remains a leader in piloting and scaling up new recommendations and innovative strategies. While the number of reported malaria cases in Senegal has dropped in recent years, malaria is still a major cause of morbidity and mortality and a high priority for the government. The National Strategic Plan for 2016–2020 strives to achieve the pre-elimination of malaria by 2020. As a result of the scale-up of malaria control interventions, parasitemia in children under five years of age has fallen to one percent nationwide in 2016. 2016 household survey data also showed that under five mortality has dropped by 58 percent since 2005.

Malaria Operational Plans

The Malaria Operational Plans below are detailed 1-year implementation plans for PMI focus countries. Each plan reviews the current status of malaria control and prevention policies and interventions, identifies challenges and unmet needs to achieve PMI goals, and provides a description of planned PMI-funded activities. Each Malaria Operational Plan has been endorsed by the U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator and reflects collaborative discussions with the national malaria control programs and partners in country. Changes to these plans are reflected in revised postings.

Peace Corps Service in Senegal Prepared Volunteers for Malaria Career

In 2012, Peace Corps volunteer Leah Moriarty was wrapping up her time in Saraya, Senegal and getting ready to pass the baton to her replacement, Annē Linn. Now, almost a decade later, they both are malaria technical advisors with the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), Leah at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Annē at USAID.

Community Takes Ownership of IRS

PMI AIRS Malaria Fighter: Dr. Ndombour Cisse

Dr. Ndombour Gning Cisse began working on the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Africa Indoor Residual Spraying (AIRS) Project in Senegal in 2011 as Spray Operations Coordinator. In 2014, she was promoted to Operations Manager and now leads the management of spray operations in target districts, working with the National Malaria Control Program. In 2015, she took on the additional role of AIRS Senegal’s Gender Focal Person. Dr. Cisse is a PhD in Animal Biology and holds an MBA in Project Management.

Engaging Senegal’s Home-Based Care Providers in the Fight Against Malaria

Despite Senegal’s progressive health system policies, which make malaria diagnosis and treatment freely available to the Senegalese population, geographic, educational, and financial barriers often impede access to these services. As a result, nine in ten malaria cases in Senegal are initially treated at home, and only 50 percent of cases ever receive formal care.

Community Case Management of Malaria—Reaching the Hard to Reach in Senegal

Across Senegal, small one- or two-room huts in remote, rural areas, far from government health facilities, provide health care to local residents. Although not a part of the formal government system, Senegal’s health care pyramid rests on a foundation of almost 1,400 of these health huts.
