Last year, more than 100,000 women attended clinics that were targeted by anti-abortion protests. This is a national issue that requires a national solution. You can become a Friend of BPAS to help us protect a woman's right to abortion care:

In our latest research paper we found that the UK has much to learn from lower- and middle-income countries when it comes to providing abortion care - but the current UK law is stifling innovation. Read more:

Emergency contraception is an important back-up method, particularly now at a time when some women are struggling to access their usual contraceptive or have a LARC fitted. To support this and our other campaigns, become a Friend of BPAS today:

Emergency contraception is an extremely safe medication, which is sold without a consultation in the USA, which is hardly a bastion of reproductive choice, Canada, and many European countries including France.

The requirement that women undergo a consultation with a pharmacist before they are "permitted" to purchase emergency contraception is clinically unnecessary, patronising and, as this case demonstrates, can be a barrier to women being able to get the medication they need.

This is one of the reasons why we campaign for emergency contraception to be reclassified so that it can be sold straight from the shelf. Pharmacists shouldn't be in a position to deny women access to a safe and effective method of contraception.

"Midwives are not the decision makers. Women are the decision makers. When we step out of their lives, women are the ones who will have to pick up the pieces, positive or negative." Brilliant presentation from on consent & respectful maternity care.

We are at webinar listening to talk about their work to end maternal health disparities in the UK. Black women are five times more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth compared with white women.

It is simply cruel that some fertility patients could be denied NHS funded IVF because they crossed an arbitrary age threshold while clinics were closed during the pandemic. must do the right thing and

Today's news from MCR is very welcome. But these protests are happening all over the country, from Aberdeen to Eastbourne - just take a look at this depressing map. All these clinics need protecting. We need national legislation for buffer zones.

It's important to stress though that these legal challenges have not been successful. They have failed in the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court has refused to hear them. The courts recognise this is harassment - no matter what the protesters say.

Buffer zones in other areas of the country have seen protest activity reduce significantly. But they are difficult to implement and there have been legal challenges from anti-abortion groups at every turn. Meanwhile, the protesters can simply relocate to the next clinic.

We fully support this buffer zone which has long been necessary. This is great news for the patients & staff at the clinic, local residents, and who have long campaigned on this issue.

People entering the clinic have reported being called "murderer" or having "holy water" thrown at them. Staff haven't been able to arrive at/leave their workplace in peace. Clients haven't been able to access medical care with the privacy to which they should be entitled

This is long overdue & fantastic news. For the last 2 years, Manchester city council has been gathering evidence to introduce this much-needed buffer zone, to protect clinic staff & patients from the anti-abortion protesters who stand outside.

We've assembled a coalition of charities, professional bodies & patient orgs to write to the Health Secretary, urging him to issue national guidance on this issue. ⏰ Our letter: Email your MP:
