Celebrating 20 Years
LifePoint Health was founded in 1999 with 23 community hospitals in nine states. A spin-off from Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), the company - then known as LifePoint Hospitals - was created on founding CEO Scott Mercy's belief that everyone deserves quality healthcare close to home and that strong hospitals create strong communities. This spirit has driven LifePoint for two decades and serves as the foundation for how we care for our communities today.

LifePoint Hospitals is founded, and the High Five Guiding Principles are created. These principles remain central to how LifePoint leaders make decisions each day.

Jim Fleetwood is named CEO after Scott Mercy's untimely death.

Ken Donahey is named CEO after Jim Fleetwood unexpectedly passes away.

The Mercy Award is established to celebrate those who demonstrate Scott Mercy's caring spirit and reflect the values on which the company was founded.

The Fleetwood Award is established to honor hospital executives who best reflect Jim Fleetwood's visionary philosophy of operational excellence.

NASA coordinates with Palestine Regional Medical Center to activate emergency plans following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

LifePoint adopts its mission of Making Communities Healthier.

LifePoint merges with Province Healthcare, nearly doubling the size of the company to 50 hospitals in 20 states.

Bill Carpenter is named CEO.

National media descends on Castleview Hospital in Price, Utah, which cared for courageous rescue workers after the Crandall Mine disaster.

LifePoint adopts its vision of creating places where people choose to come for healthcare, physicians want to practice and employees want to work.

The William V. Lapham Award for Extraordinary Integrity is established, honoring founding board member and former chairman of the Audit and Compliance Committee Bill Lapham.

Following disasters in its communities and around the world, LifePoint creates the LifeCare Disaster Recovery Fund to help employees during times of need and the LifePoint Disaster Response Fund to aid in global recovery efforts.

LifePoint and Duke expand their relationship, forming an innovative joint venture. Combining LifePoint's experience in community-based hospital management and Duke's world-renowned leadership in patient safety and clinical quality systems, Duke LifePoint was created to strengthen healthcare delivery by providing clinical, quality and operational resources needed to grow and prosper.

LifePoint is the only investor-owned hospital system awarded a Hospital Engagement Network contract from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

LifePoint establishes its National Physician Advisory Board to provide strategic guidance on efforts related to enhancing clinical quality, physician engagement and innovative models of healthcare delivery.

LifePoint moves into a new Hospital Support Center in Brentwood, with construction features that highlight the company's commitment to mission, talent development and wellness.

LifePoint enters into an agreement with Duke to launch a common quality and patient safety platform to ensure consistent, high standards of quality and safety in LifePoint facilities nationwide called the LifePoint National Quality Program. Designation is awarded to those facilities that succeed in transforming their culture of safety and achieving high standards of quality care.

LifePoint establishes a national Patient and Family Advisory Board to ensure a patient-centered approach to care.

LifePoint debuts on the Fortune 500 list.

Reflecting its evolution from a hospital operator to a healthcare company addressing comprehensive needs across the continuum of care, LifePoint Hospitals changes its name to LifePoint Health.

Clark Regional Medical Center is named the first Duke LifePoint Quality Affiliate.

LifePoint merges with RCCH HealthCare Partners, growing to 89 hospital campuses in 30 states as the company goes private in a transaction valued at $5.6 billion.
