ACM Statement

In the United States, and throughout many regions around the world, current events have brought attention to the urgent need for equality and respect for all individuals. ACM reaffirms its commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the global computer science community.  

As an international organization of nearly 100,000 professionals, ACM respects the essential worth of all people and firmly believes that diversity strengthens the scientific enterprise and society as a whole. ACM’s Code of Professional Ethics embodies these principles, and our Diversity and Inclusion Council works to translate them into effective action. 

ACM is committed to creating an environment that welcomes new ideas and perspectives, and where hostility or other harmful behaviors are not tolerated. As an organization, we stand with those who promote inclusivity.

 

SIGCOMM is ACM's professional forum for discussing communications and computer networks.

SIGCOMM members include scientists, engineers, educators and students. They study all aspects of computer communications and networks: analysis, technical design, engineering, measurement and management. Our members are particularly interested in the systems engineering and architectural questions surrounding computer communication.

    Call for Participation, Applied Networking Research Workshop (ANRW) 2020
     
    Registration is now open for the Applied Networking Research Workshop (ANRW) 2020, which will bring together researchers, operators and representatives of the Internet standards community from around the world and is set to take place online during the week of 27-31 July 2020.
     
    Interspersed with sessions of the IETF 108 Online meeting scheduled for the same week, this year’s ANRW event will consist of four separate sessions with more than a dozen total presentations covering applied research across a wide range of topics, including: DNS and BGP, protocol testing and validation, monitoring and logging, and transport protocols and traffic engineering. A full program is available on the ANRW 2020 website.
     
    Participation in the ANRW is open to anyone, with registration required. Registration is free for those attending IETF 108 Online; to attend ANRW only as a separate event, a $25 registration fee is charged.

    ACM SIGCOMM 2020 Test of Time Paper Award
     
    The Test of Time award for 2020 is awarded to:
     
    "A network in a laptop: rapid prototyping for software-defined networks" by Bob Lantz, Brandon Heller, and Nick McKeown, in ACM HotNets 2010
     
    Using illustrative cases studies, the paper demonstrates how a Mininet-based design can be wrapped in a VM to create a “network appliance” that can be distributed over the Internet so that anyone with a laptop can download and run a ``living, breathing” example of a new networked system. The paper has had a profound impact on catalyzing collaborative network research by setting new standards for reproducible networking research in the form of “runnable papers.” 
     
    The 2020 award paper was selected by a committee composed of: Paul Barford (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Hamed Haddadi (Imperial College London, chair), Thomas Karagiannis (Microsoft Research Cambridge), Sue Moon (KAIST), Walter Willinger (NIKSUN).
     

    Call for Nominations for SIGCOMM 2020 Rising Star Award
     
    Each year, ACM SIGCOMM will present a "Rising Star" Award, recognizing a young researcher - an individual within 10 years of receiving their highest university degree - who has made outstanding research contributions to the field of communication networks during this early part of their career.  Depth, impact, and novelty of the researcher's contributions will be key criteria upon which the Rising Star award committee will evaluate the nominees.  Also of particular interest are strong research contributions made independently from the nominee's PhD advisor.
     
    The award will be presented at the annual ACM CoNEXT conference, where the award-winner will deliver a keynote address.   Conference registration, travel, and lodging for the awardee will be paid by ACM SIGCOMM.

    There will be an online discussion of "teaching networking during the pandemic, and beyond". Amazing educators from our field will be speaking in panels and leading interactive sessions to give advice and brainstorm ideas on how to engage students online and more.     This year's SIGCOMM poster/demo session presents an exciting opportunity for students to present their work "virtually". Like the main conference, this year's Poster/Demo session will also take place online. Accepted posters and demos will be published as a two-page abstract for the archived conference proceedings. The SIGCOMM poster and demo sessions will also serve as an ACM SIGCOMM Student Research Competition.

    Call for Submission (HotNets’20)
    The 19th ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks (HotNets 2020, November 5-6 @ Chicago) will bring together researchers in computer networks and systems to engage in a lively debate on the theory and practice of computer networking. We invite researchers and practitioners to submit short position papers. We encourage papers that identify fundamental open questions, advocate a new approach, offer a constructive critique of the state of networking research, re-frame or debunk existing work, report unexpected early results from a deployment, report on promising but unproven ideas, or propose new evaluation methods.

    Open Access to ACM Digital Library During Coronavirus Pandemic
    As a means to help researchers now working remotely and to support the computing community, ACM is providing open access to the ACM Digital Library for the next three months.  There will be no fees assessed for accessing or downloading work published by ACM.

    SIGCOMM Response to COVID-19
    The COVID-19 has affected many in our community and we have all had to adapt to the new constraints it has imposed.  This has also affected several of our conferences.   
     
    The SOSR 2020 conference that was to be held early March was the first to have to cancel its physical conference.  Because the cancellation happened close to the conference date many travel grant recipients had already made arrangements to attend, and the SIG worked with ACM to ensure that travel grant recipients would be reimbursed for expenses they had incurred.  
     
    All other SIG-sponsored conferences that are to be held later this year are currently putting together contingency plans in case they need to follow suit.  In particular, most are exploring options for holding a “virtual conference.” Towards assisting with this goal, ACM has recently chartered a presidential task force aimed at offering the community some guidance on best practices for virtual conferences.  We are actively participating in this effort, and the task force is preparing to release a draft report titled “Virtual Conferences: A Guide to Best Practices” that will be distributed to conference organizers to assist them in evaluating options to move their conference to a virtual model.

    ACM SIGCOMM Slack Workspace
    ACM SIGCOMM has created a Slack workspace for people interested in computer networking. This workspace is intended to be a fun, welcoming environment for encouraging discussions between students and researchers in our community. With the upcoming array of "virtual conferences" this platform may help replace the informal conversations that happen during the breaks which would otherwise be missed. With the COVID-19 outbreak many folks are locked in their homes at this time with reduced social interactions, and having a platform for conversations may be helpful for that reason as well.

    Call for submissions: ACM SIGCOMM EPIQ’20
    Workshop on the Evolution, Performance, and Interoperability of QUIC (EPIQ)

    The transport protocol QUIC has emerged from a proprietary effort undertaken by Google to a next generation transport protocol being standardized in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). While its original motivation and design was to support next-generation Web traffic using HTTP/2, embedding QUIC into the Internet architecture raises exciting challenges beyond the necessary engineering efforts. QUIC has already seen deployment and motivated research papers measuring, extending, and evaluating QUIC from various perspectives.
     
    The Second ACM SIGCOMM Workshop on the Evolution, Performance, and Interoperability of QUIC (EPIQ) seeks to continue to foster this emerging community. We invite researchers from academia and industry as well as engineers to explore novel ideas and future directions of QUIC and its interaction with applications and networks.
