Tenba has introduced the Cooper, a luxury leather and canvas bags collection. The new collection is styled after classic messenger bags, and is made from canvas alongside full grain leather trim and other high-end touches. Nikon has released updated firmware for its D810 DSLR, taking the software from version C 1.02 to C 1.10. The new firmware brings with it several changes, the majority of which are bug fixes. In addition to correcting issues, v1.10 adds an external recording control option for using the camera to start and stop third-party recorders connected over HDMI. Read more
Sony has released its Q2 2015 financial results, posting a 3% decline year-on-year in imaging product sales on a constant currency basis. However, demand for high-value added models, favorable exchange rates and internal cost reductions led to a bump in that group's operating income - up to ¥25.9bn ($216m) compared to 20.1bn this time last year. Manfrotto's Digital Director, introduced in April, is a departure from its usual array of tripods and tripod heads. It's a device designed to hold an iPad Air tethered to a DSLR, providing a large live view screen, access to camera controls and wireless sharing options. Shooting with a large screen can be a revelation compared to using a 3" LCD, but the Digital Director is pretty pricey. Is it worth the cost? Read more

Canon's Imaging Systems business has reported its third quarter sales fell by ¥26.5bn ($220m), compared to the same time last year. The company blamed a decline in worldwide demand for its interchangeable lens cameras 'due to market shrinkage,' with unit sales down 17% year-on-year, despite sales increases in Japan and Europe. It combines a new lens system (using the existing mount from the T) with an extremely high resolution viewfinder and a sensor based on the one used by the coveted Leica Q. The Leica SL Typ 601 is the German manufacturer's first foray into the full-frame mirrorless world, offering a 24MP CMOS sensor in a weather-sealed, milled-aluminum body. Ricoh Imaging US has announced the Medium Format by PENTAX Advantage Program, a new support and service offering for the Pentax 645Z camera. Under this program, camera owners are given three years of extended service and support from the date of purchase, as well as loaner lenses and camera bodies and a toll-free support number. Read more

Researches from German university Ruhr-Universitat Bochum spent half a decade creating the largest astronomical image created to date, a 46-gigapixel image of the Milky Way, which is now available via an interactive online viewer. The image is made up of 46 billion pixels, and the file weighs in at a hefty 194GB. Read more

Toshiba is finalizing plans to sell its image sensor business to Sony for an estimated $165 million (¥20 billion) in a bid to raise cash after a $1.3 billion accounting scandal. Toshiba has been unloading assets as part of its restructuring plan. Sony currently has 40% of the growing image sensor market, and is quadrupling spending to keep up with demand.

Chinese manufacturer Zhongyi optics has announced a new lens, the stupendously large Zhongyi 135mm F1.4 Speedmaster. Chinese lens manufacturer Shenyang Zhongyi Optics has redesigned the optical construction of is Turbo Adapter that allows Micro Four Thirds users to mount Nikon and Canon lenses to their cameras. The details are slight, but the company says the configuration is completely different, although still using four elements, and new coatings have been applied to reduce flare and increase contrast. Yesterday, Western Digital announced plans to acquire SanDisk Corporation, a company that specializes in memory chips and SD cards. According to a statement released on Wednesday, WD will purchase all of SanDisk’s shares in a deal totaling about $19 billion; a combination of cash and stock will be paid. Read more
Phase One has today introduced a firmware update for its new XF system, announced in June. The update brings new tools to those using the XF with its Waist Level Finder, as well as a seismograph vibration delay mode. Additionally, three new leaf shutter Schneider Kreuznach lenses are announced. Read more

Lensbaby has announced new additions to its lens lineup with the Composer Pro II and Edge 50 Optic. The Composer Pro II houses the swap-able optic, updating the original Composer with an 'upgraded' metal body, and the 50mm equivalent F3.2 Edge optic provides a tilt shift effect slice of focus that can be moved around the frame. Fujifilm has added another lens to its X-mount, this one being a low-cost Fujinon XF 35mm F2 prime. This compact lens features a nearly silent internal AF system, 9-blade circular aperture, 2 ED elements, and is sealed against moisture and dust. Also announced is a 1.4x teleconverter, which is currently only compatible with the XF 50-140mm F2.8 zoom. It will, however, be compatible with future lenses, including the XF 100-400mm super telephoto lens expected next year. Read more.
ZY Optics, a Chinese company that sells lenses under brand name Mitakon, teased a massive lens on the Chinese social network Weibo over the weekend, the Mitakon Speedmaster 135mm F1.4. While the company revealed a few details at the time, it didn't specify when the lens would be available for pre-order. That changed on Monday, and the company is now offering $500 non-refundable deposits to reserve a unit for shipping in early 2016. Read more

Leica has just unveiled its first full-frame mirrorless ILC, the SL Type 601. The new camera uses a modified version of the 24MP CMOS sensor from the Leica Q in tandem with a Maestro II processor, allowing ISO 50-50,000 shooting, 4K video recording and 11 fps continuous shooting. With early access to a full production SL, we've been able to test it against our studio test scene as well as in a variety of real-world shooting conditions. Read more

Leica has introduced the full-frame SL system, including the SL Typ 601 ILC and three compatible SL lenses. The SL uses a 24MP CMOS sensor adapted from the Leica Q, and true to form its weather-sealed body is cut from a single block of milled aluminum. Read more
Earlier this year Nikon expanded a series of F1.8 primes with the 24mm F1.8G ED, sitting alongside 20mm and 35mm models. Compact and lightweight, it hits a $750 price point that's relatively reasonable, considering the F1.4 version retails for over $2000. A picture of the Dorset coastline on a snowy day has won a UK photographer the £10,000 top prize in the 'Take A View' competition. Andy Farrer, a professional photographer from Dorset, England, has become the ninth Landscape Photographer of the Year with his image of 'Bat's Head In The Snow’. Read more
The U.S. government may soon require most drones to be registered, according to the Associated Press. Sources speaking on the matter state the FAA is working with unspecified industry and government officials to create a registration system. While the exact requirements aren't known, it is believed small and toy drones will not require registration. Read more
Sony has gradually been updating its Alpha line of full frame mirrorless cameras, and the a7S II is the latest to get the update treatment. The original a7S gained a bit of a cult following as an outstanding HD video camera, thanks to its full sensor readout, outstanding HD video, and impressive low light capability. As a result, it should come as no surprise that Sony has largely aimed the a7S II at the videography crowd. Click through to read more

Change may come soon for the web's most widely adopted image format. Earlier this week at a meeting in Brussels, the JPEG Committee discussed adding a DRM (Digital Rights Management) security feature to the regular JPEG image format. Read more
DJI, the maker of Phantom drones, has introduced a stabilized handheld 4K video system that uses a gimbal head to produce smooth video footage. The DJI Osmo is a handle-mount with a 3-axis head that senses movement and cancels out sudden jerks and bumps to ensure the camera moves slowly and the footage looks professional. Read more
Next week sees the return of PhotoPlus Expo, the largest photography and imaging show in the United States. Held October 21-24 in the Javits Center in New York City, PPE 2015 will play host to more than 100 educational seminars, Photo Walks and Master Classes, and over 250 exhibitors displaying thousands of products. The Sony a7S II looks a lot like its full-frame Alpha mirrorless counterparts, but behind the familiar face are some important new features - namely, the ability to record 4K video internally. Its specifications are tuned to videography, with features like Full HD recording at 120fps, but its low light stills potential is equally compelling. Last month Sony promised to address a key concern of a7-series camera owners with a firmware update adding 14-bit uncompressed Raw support. The a7R II was named as the first in line to get the update, and Sony has confirmed that the firmware version will come Monday, October 19. Read more

Sony has announced its Cyber-shot RX1R II, an update to 2013's RX1 and RX1R full-frame, fixed-lens compact cameras. The RX1R II brings a 42.4 Megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor borrowed from the a7R II, 35mm F2 Zeiss Sonnar T* lens, retractable viewfinder, variable low-pass filter and greatly improved autofocus. Read more
German optical manufacturer Zeiss has announced it is to introduce a wide angle to its Otus family of lenses designed for full frame SLR cameras. The Zeiss Otus 1.4/28 is a 28mm lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4, and will be available with ZE and ZF.2 mounts for Canon EOS and Nikon F cameras. Read more
Tamron seemed to have taken a cue from Sigma when it launched the SP 35mm and 45mm F1.8, following that company's lead in offering fast, high quality fixed focal length lenses. Designed for full frame camera bodies, the SP 35mm and 45mm boast weather-proofing, fluorine coatings and close-focusing abilities not usually found at these focal lengths. Lomography has introduced the Lomo’instant Wide camera. Using Fujifilm Instax Wide film, the camera offers a 35mm equivalent lens and Auto, Bulb, and 1/30sec Fixed Shutter Speed modes. While the 24-200mm F2.8 equivalent lens and external body design remain unchanged, the RX10 II sports a new stacked sensor and can record 4k video internally, with full sensor readout. ZEISS has introduced the 21mm F2.8 to its Loxia lineup for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, joining the 35mm F2 and 50mm F2. Like its siblings, the 2.8/21 allows the user to de-click the aperture ring for video recording. Read more
Adobe has issued an apology over the 'significant crashing bug' introduced in Lightroom 6.2. The latest version of the software was released last Monday, and brought with it a redesigned import experience. That new experience, unfortunately, also introduced instability into Lightroom and removed some import functions; users reported issues with the software crashing and running poorly. Read more
Australia-based conceptual artist Colin Anderson is re-defining what it means to be a modern photographer. An early adopter of Photoshop, Anderson creates complex allegorical images from a number of visual elements, including stills captured with a medium format camera and 3D elements created from scratch. Voigtländer has introduced three new lenses that will be released in Spring 2016: the 10mm F5.6 Hyper-Wide-Heliar, 12mm F5.6 Ultra-Wide-Heliar, and 15mm F4.5 Super-Wide-Heliar. All three lenses will feature a Sony E-mount for use with full-frame Sony cameras without an adapter. Read more

Their energetic live shows pack venues throughout the year in their hometown, but recently, they performed their single 'Moment' for a different crowd: a small crew of filmmakers armed with Samsung NX1 and NX500 cameras, led by directors Brad Strain and Matt Kumasaka. US-based startup Light has officially introduced its L16, a portable device packed with 16 individual cameras, ten of which capture an image at the same time at different fixed focal lengths. The resulting photograph is a composite of all the individual images combined, with a final resolution of up to 52 megapixels. An earlier prototype of this camera was shown off this past April. Sony Corporation is to split the part of its business that makes imaging sensors away from the Devices segment that it currently comes under, to form its own company called Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation. Sony has said that the degree of autonomy that the new company will enjoy will allow it to react more quickly to changing market forces and will encourage the business to grow more quickly. Read more
Manfrotto has launched the Pixi Evo, a miniature lightweight tripod with two-section legs and five adjustable steps. The Pixi Evo represents a design update over the original Pixi mini tripod, and is designed, in part, to support entry-level DSLRs with large lenses. Read more
