My lookback on a rollercoaster 2021 in which stood up for doctors & colleagues, spoke out to protect public’s health & NHS, fought for equality here & globally. Looking to 2022 - can governments act on lessons learnt & make it the year of recovery?

And then this. 👇🏽 The 6th European nursing congress being held during black history month. Not one nurse of colour presenting, no mention of inclusion or racism. Something wrong with the nursing profession and it’s senior leadership in Europe, future proofing nursing indeed!

Today we publish a landmark report into racism in medicine. It reveals persistent, intolerable levels of racism faced by doctors from ethnic minorities and the very real danger we face of a major exodus of these doctors from the profession #BMARaceEquality

I know it seems like a whinge all the time, but senior doctors can only be fooled so many times. It can and must be fixed if we would like to maintain let alone improve NHS services in primary and secondary care.

Panels to follow 5 principles:
A anonymity = gender and ethnicity blinded
E expert = peer representation on panel
I independent = free of organisational bias
O objective = defendant’s story also heard
U understanding = awareness of defendant’s situation

Agree - but "panel" needs to be independent, objective & impartial - I've come across employer "panels" referring to GMC providing written rationale but conflicted, biased & based on "employer" perspective. Anonymisation also helps as per @AntonEmmanuel2 bmj.com/content/377/bm

The Manjula Arora case has sparked anger among doctors who believe that the GP has been “suspended for semantics” & that the disciplinary process is biased against doctors who trained overseas doctors.

The Arora ruling demands wholesale reform GMC referral pathway:
- stopping employers weaponising referrals
- external scrutiny panel for all GMC referrals before decision to investigate, supporting appropriate local resolution
- reform MPTS processes
