What we aim to solve
The Lifeboat Foundation is a nonprofit nongovernmental organization dedicated to encouraging scientific advancements while helping humanity survive existential risks and possible misuse of increasingly powerful technologies, including genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and robotics/AI, as we move towards the Singularity.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
NanoShield Fund
The NanoShield Fund is used to turn our NanoShield program into reality.
While we won't be funding the development of massive utility fog curtains or orbiting laser platforms in the near future, we can do something today.
Currently this fund's goal is to pay for the Thermal Censorship of Ecophagy Study by Robert A. Freitas Jr. He has found preliminary evidence that diamond mechanosynthesis may not be reliable enough at ambient temperatures to sustain an existential risk from microscopic ecophagic replicators and needs to investigate this further.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Lifeboat Foundation is pursuing a variety of options, including helping to accelerate the development of technologies to defend humanity such as new methods to combat viruses, effective nanotechnological defensive strategies, and even self-sustaining space colonies in case the other defensive strategies fail.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our primary strategy is education. We educate the public via books, social media, our website, and even conferences.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We are a high-traffic site with high-traffic related social media and people pay attention to us.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have created many programs that are educating the public. We have also published books and reports, developed a comprehensive web site, created educational videos, judged contests, and maintain an active social media presence. We also promote over 10 conferences per year and have awarded grants to relevant projects.
Ideally our endowment fund would get so big that instead of only doing education, we would also fund defenses against dangerous technologies.
