MTV Base is a British pay television hip-hop/urban music channel from ViacomCBS Networks UK & Australia. It primarily on hip hop, R&B, grime, garage, reggae, funk and soul music. It was launched on 30 July 1999.

History[edit]

The MTV Base brand first launched in the United Kingdom and in Ireland on 1 July 1999, later launching in other European territories such as the Netherlands and Germany. The channel was previously available in the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, France and other European countries but was replaced by MTV Dance in some territories from March 2008.

MTV Base began broadcasting in widescreen on 28 March 2012.

A European version was planned to launch in 2015.[1]

Expansion into Africa[edit]

MTV Base Africa launched in February 2005 throughout the African continent.

On 3 July 2013, Viacom International Media Networks Africa launched an localised feed of MTV Base exclusively for South Africa,[2] with local programming, advertising and VJs.[3]

Expansion into France[edit]

MTV Base was launched in France on 21 December 2007.

The channel was replaced by French versions of MTV Hits and BET on 17 November 2015.
