Many companies succumb to challenges associated with supply capacity. Those challenges may be overrelying on labor arbitrage, not planning soon enough for growth, failing to evaluate a range of options in today's protectionist global environment, or thinking that hyperefficient and large plants can be replicated to support future growth.
It is nearly impossible to manage capacity at a network level intuitively, as the trade-offs become interdependent and any moves across sites cause baseline manufacturing costs to shift. Rather, it requires a process that combines the ability to view complex variables and evaluate different options to arrive at analytically driven decision making. However, only a minority of companies have this capability.
