Demonstrators in the city have set up an area around the abandoned East Precinct called the “Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone,” and footage from the area shows peaceful protesters watching films and listening to live music. There have been over a week of demonstrations in the city, including some clashes between protesters and police.

The rally will be held on June 19, also known as Juneteenth, a day of commemoration for the ending of slavery in the US. Many also pointed out that in 1921, Tulsa was the site of one of the worst incidents of racial violence in US history, when hundreds of Black Americans were killed by mobs of white residents in the Greenwood District.
