Founders

Toby Ord

Founder

Toby Ord is a Senior Research Fellow at the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University. His current research is on the long-term future of humanity, and the risks which threaten to drastically limit our potential. His book, The Precipice, explores these topics in more detail.

Toby co-founded Giving What We Can and the wider effective altruism movement.

William MacAskill

Co-Founder

Will co-founded Giving What We Can and 80,000 Hours, and is a trustee of the Centre for Effective Altruism. He is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at Lincoln College, Oxford. He studied philosophy at Cambridge (B.A.) and Oxford (BPhil, DPhil), and was a Fulbright Scholar at Princeton. He has published in top philosophy journal Ethics and wrote book about Effective Altruism, Doing Good Better.


Staff

Julia Wise

President

Julia oversees Giving What We Can and serves as a Community Liaison at the Centre for Effective Altruism. Her training is in sociology and social work, and before coming to the Centre for Effective Altruism she spent three years as a mental health worker.

Sam Deere

Technical Director

Sam co-manages the Giving What We Can website and tech stack.

He has previously worked in policy and communications roles for several high-profile Australian politicians, and was part of the team that won the ‘unwinnable’ 2014 South Australian state election. He studied Politics and History at the University of Adelaide, and has nearly a decade of experience as a web developer. While no longer working in politics, Sam takes a strong interest in global politics and policymaking, and is also a keen photographer.

JP Addison

Developer

As a developer at the Centre for Effective Altruism, JP works with Sam on technical projects for Giving What We Can, including the website and the platform that members can use to track their donations. Before joining CEA, he wrote data processing code for an aerospace startup and cofounded the South Bay Effective Altruism meetup group.

Aaron Gertler

Operations

Aaron works on projects related to communicating with Giving What We Can members and is a writer at the Centre for Effective Altruism. He previously worked in freelance positions throughout the EA community and spent a year earning to give at a software company.
