The Open Philanthropy Project— a grantmaker working to give away billions of dollars to improve well-being as much as possible — is seeking two to three Operations Associates. We are currently a ~25-person organization giving away over $100 million per year, and we plan to grow to meet our main funders’ goal of giving away the majority of their wealth within their lifetimes. We also aspire to become a key source of giving recommendations and a role model organization for other major philanthropists.
Our operations team will be responsible for helping build a sustainable, scalable organization as we increase our giving. This will include significantly expanding and improving our current grants management system as well as helping build out our operations, including finance, budgeting, HR, IT, office management, employee development and engagement, and legal capabilities. For this team, we seek capable generalists who are passionate about our mission, excited by the challenge of building a great organization, and comfortable with a fluid role.
About Us
The Open Philanthropy Project (“Open Phil”) identifies outstanding giving opportunities, makes grants, follows the results, and publishes our findings. Our main funders are Cari Tuna and Dustin Moskovitz, a co-founder of Facebook and Asana. We aim to do as much good as possible, and our current giving areas include global health and development, scientific research, U.S. policy (primarily criminal justice reform and farm animal welfare), and global catastrophic risks (primarily biosecurity and pandemic preparedness, and potential risks from advanced artificial intelligence).
Job Description
To help us continue to build a great organization, we are looking for a few Associates for our operations team. Responsibilities will encompass a wide range of areas based both on changing organizational needs and personal fit, but could include the following types of activities:
Analyze, revise and improve our processes and policies (e.g. drafting a remote worker policy, streamlining our onboarding, speeding up our grantmaking, proposing new employee benefits).
Plan and lead events, such as a multi-day off-site retreat for the Open Phil team
Collaborate with external programmers to implement Salesforce tools, such as grants management software, CRM, contractor processing, etc.
Develop a staff handbook and intranet
Search for new office space and coordinate a move
Improve the working environment to increase staff productivity and engagement
Perform administrative tasks including answering inbound email, scheduling, booking travel, submitting reimbursements, data entry, etc.About You

This is a full-time position based in San Francisco.
