Pharmacy is a science and profession concerned with the safe and efficacious use of medication. Traditionally, pharmacists have compounded and dispensed medications on the orders of physicians. More recently, pharmacy has come to include other services related to patient care including clinical practice, medication therapy management, drug information, and poison control. Pharmacists are not just experts on drugs but the authority on drug use.

"Pharmacists" can work in a wide range of practices including community pharmacies, hospitals, acute care settings, long term care facilities, even marijuana dispensaries. The community pharmacist is the most recognized in the profession, as they are the one working at the local drug stores. The most typical responsibility of a pharmacist is verifying doctors medication orders (prescription) and dispensing the medication to the patient. While verifying the order is appropriate for the specific patient the pharmacist is also checking for possible medication interactions, disease interactions, and drug allergies. Pharmacists will also counsel patients on the medications they take to ensure safety and efficacy of the therapy.

Branches and Departments[edit]

The discipline of pharmacy is divided into three main branches

1. Pharmaceutics

Pharmaceutics is the branch which deals with the presentation of drug or medicine in a suitable form which are also called Dosage forms and check the actions of drugs in a body.

2. Pharmaceutical Sciences

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Pharmaceutical Chemistry deals in the chemistry of drugs, their physical properties and nature.

  • Pharmacology

Pharmacology works with the action of the drugs in the body.

  • Pharmacognosy

Pharmacognosy is the mother of pharmacy. It deals with the extraction of drugs from natural resources i.e from animals to minerals and plants to microorganisms.

3. Pharmacy practice

Pharmacy practice relates to the people working at drugstores or hospitals whose goal is to dispense the drugs to the patients.

4. Pharmaceutical analysis

it refers to the analysis of any pharmaceutical drug and its stability, using various analytical techniques like gc-nmr, hplc, chromatography, etc.
