Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, national security and public health concerns are providing new rationales for protectionism, especially for medical gear and food. This retreat will not mark the end of globalization, but new restrictions on trade could proliferate and inflict damage that could take decades to reverse.

The Peterson Institute for International Economics will be closed to staff and visitors as of 6pm Friday, March 13. All PIIE personnel will work remotely, with access to telephone messages, until further notice.
