I'm mainly annoyed about this because asked a v good and fair question then - how will UK reach 100k tests a day by end of April if only one mega lab is operational and two will open in next two weeks? And he dismissed the premise of the question 🤷‍♀️

So the UK's second mega lab for coronavirus testing has just opened (see gov press release 👇), after Matt Hancock told us in 10th April presser that all three mega labs "have already got going". I'm sure he'll argue it's just semantics but I think language matters

Weekend read: for the first time in history yesterday's Daily Mail carried a "wrap" advert all the way round the paper. Government ads on all regional and national papers help spread the 'Stay At Home' message.. but help prop up the ailing news industry.

Arthur Whitby’s family will remember him in his prime though: a dedicated borough councillor, a Frank Sinatra fan, a fine grower of tomato plants, a school governor, and a much-loved father, grandfather and great-grandfather

It raises questions over the true number of people who have already returned to care homes from hospital without being tested, despite medics suspecting they have the virus. Government has said they will all now get a test - but this family says it's "far too late"

New: I spoke to the family of a 98 year-old man who died in a care home a week after being discharged from hospital - the family found out afterwards that the main cause of death was COVID-19 - but neither they nor the care home had been told he had it

Been hearing from NHS staff this week who were offended by Matt Hancock saying there was a "lack of demand" over Easter weekend for tests - they have been trying and failing to get tested. There seem to be v different rules for diff trusts (my DMs are open)

Wow this is damning from a scientist at one of the UK's big testing labs - big questions for government here

Remember the 3.5m antibody tests that didn’t work? Last week I reported that the UK paid *up front*. Now, and reveal the whole saga. U.K. Paid $20 Million for New Coronavirus Tests. They Didn’t Work.

Domestic abusers aren’t bothering to hit their victims on parts of their bodies covered by clothes at the moment, because no-one will see their bruised faces during the lockdown. Easily the most harrowing bit of working on this piece

We wrote about this issue last month - thousands of people affected through sheer bad luck. V welcome that the Treasury is moving on this but not going far enough for many people

The Treasury has extended its coronavirus furlough scheme so the cut-off date is now 19 March NOT 28 Feb to help those who took on new jobs. BUT crucially those people had to be on the *payroll* by 19 March - and many new starters weren't, so don't benefit
