Open Philanthropy began as a partnership between GiveWell and Good Ventures, a philanthropic foundation founded by Cari Tuna and Dustin Moskovitz, one of the co-founders of Facebook and Asana. Open Philanthropy became an independent organization in June 2017.
GiveWell and Open Philanthropy are now separate entities with separate financial and human resources and separate governing bodies. Each organization determines how to allocate its own resources. Open Philanthropy and Good Ventures have provided support for GiveWell's operations, capped, for reasons described here, at 20 percent of GiveWell's operating expenses.
The organizations continue to share many core values. Most of Open Philanthropy's grantmaking in global health and development is to organizations GiveWell recommends: top charities, standout charities, and GiveWell Incubation Grant recipients. In addition, Cari Tuna and Holden Karnofsky of Open Philanthropy sit on GiveWell's Board of Directors and GiveWell's CEO, Elie Hassenfeld, sits on Open Philanthropy's Board of Managers.
