    The flu killed 79,400 Americans in the 2017-18 flu season. Its mortality rate is about 0.1%. Coronavirus has killed 1,100 people, mostly in China, a country 4x America’s population. Its mortality rate outside of Hubei province is 0.16%.

    The psychology of risk is fascinating. If this young woman had died from the new coronavirus, the DC area would be going bananas with masks and demands for a vaccine and the like. But the flu? People think "Sad..." and move on.
